Title: Rant............
Post by: George A on January 23, 2016, 10:54:20 PM
So it's a rainy, overcast day up here in northern California. Got enough firewood. Got enough food. All of my projects are on hold waiting for parts, so I'm just sitting around watching the news about the monstrous snow storm that's shutting down the entire eastern portion of the country. Power outages reported in sections of almost every state affected.

Meanwhile, my listeroid generator and newly installed power panel switch sits idle as our commercial power keeps humming along with no interuptions. I look at the t.v. news again and think to myself, "Some people have all the luck......."

Sigh..........

I'm getting plenty of time in this cloudy weather, on my listeroid.

@George A

You don't need an excuse to run it! Just invite the neighbours over bor a beer and crank it up......good conversation piece, and needs a bit of exercise every once in a while anyhow!

Or....you could unplug from that commercial power

Off-grid, so the Listeroid here gets used nearly every day for charging the bats in our cloudy wet winters.
......just about time to go out and crank it up now.....

Cheers,
Hugh

Well, if nothing else I'm finalizing my plans to make my installation permanent and get away from having to roll the whole thing into the center of the garage to run it. I think I'll use a vertical muffler setup in the corner with a "disconnectable" exhaust flange of some sort  in case it needs to be moved for repairs.

Time to get out the sketch pad and take some measurements........

It could be worse. You could have all of this snow and the power still be on.  ;D

We got 18" but the wind whipped up some 4' drifts for me. I really dislike shoveling snow.

Time to start drawing up the plans for that listeroid powered tractor....................:)

Max I'd ever run was 250 hours, I keep a log, just passed 250 hours last week. There are now over 2350 hours time on the set. Off-grid living, I love it.

Hey George,

Re the exhaust....

That's pretty much what I did... the green monster sits on a wheeled chassis, it has a built in exhaust that goes down from the port and travels the entire length of the chassis forward, below the axles.. at the 'front' it travels upwards about 3ft in a 'silencer' then into a 90 degree bend that is connected to a flexible coupling of sorts and then goes to a wall mount vertical 6" pipe .... the good side is, being pretty much self contained, it can be re-sited for major work and running etc... because the first half of the exhaust is integral to the chassis, it can be run as is and the final outlet can  either be vertical, or 360 degrees of choice by using the elbow/slow bend... it has been pretty handy so far, just not much fun moving 2t of steel around at a whim!

Cheers,
Ed

8" of snow here in the middle of TN with a low of  4 degrees last night. Deep South my big ol butt! :D
The power went down about 6pm Friday and finally back on Sat around 1:30pm.
Walla Walla Xing Dong purred and rattled for 9 or 10 hours on one fuel up, so we were just fine, but I had a bunch of cold neighbors! I was busy running for the Ladies down the road looking for kerosene (none to be found) taking them gas for their genny, which I had on hand. I invited everyone to my place to stay warm if they needed help, food etc.
I don't get it, we had warnings for 2 or 3 days before that the storm was coming, why not prepare? I did!
Ron.

Ed, that's VERY much what I have in mind. By running the first section of exhaust "down and around" before a muffler, it allows the gasses to slow down a bit.

Hey George,

While u are at it, why not make it a wet jacket for cogen..... even if you don't use it initially, it acts as a heat shield..... 1 1/2" inner with about a 2 1/2"  or 3" outer....

Cheers
