Title: valve guides
Post by: selmawp on January 17, 2014, 03:41:08 AM
Today we discovered something we have not read about before. While doing a new valve job on our 10/1 we needed to replace the valve guides as they were worn out, not having any in stock we robbed some off Tony's 14/1 as they were the same size. After having installed them, and were finished with all the machining, we noticed small holes in the old 10/1 guides that are not in the 14/1 guides. Our guess is that the holes

are for oil to get down into the guides. ANY THOUGHTS OR COMMENTS?

I have had genuine CS engines in the shop from model year 1938 to late 70s and have never seen the oil holes in a Lister guide. Thus I have always assumed it was an Indian modification. Not all Indian engines have them either as you have found. Also same as you I have seen them only in the higher speed Indian engines not the 650 or 800 RPM versions. The holes are not needed to provide adequate lubrication to the stem and guide. When the wells are kept to proper levels more than enough oil gets splashed up on the stems.

Oil flow to the stem/guide area is best controlled by the amount of chamfer on the top of the guide. When we rebuild engines in the shop we face the guide tops flat with almost no chamfer so that oil consumption is minimized. None the less if worried about lubrication chuck a chamfer tool in a drill and cut a 1/16" chamfer at the top of the guide and you have more guide oiling than you will ever need. You really only need to worry about the exhaust as the intakes always have more oil than needed due to suction.

I found a set of guides like that in a 6/1 head. I wondered why the thing smoked so badly with that head. >:( I believe that modification was preformed by someone who has no understanding how the oiling on a Lister is supposed to work. As Butch said when the spring wells are filled correctly there is plenty of oil to the guides. Adding these holes drains the wells! Rather quickly too.

I the same order with the head was a replacement set of guides. They were machined properly to the original Lister spec with the fully shrouded exhaust valve stem. So go figure, I guess the Indians figure variety is the spice of life.
