I have a startomatic all apart and just for fun today I weighed the flywheels. This is a 2.5kva 6/1 startomatic. I've read several differing posts about the weight, but here's what my bathroom scale says:
The generator flywheel weighs 80 pounds.
The engine flywheel with the belt grooves weighs 260 pounds.
The engine flywheel without the grooves weighs 275 pounds.

I thought US bathroom scales weighed uo to a 1000 lbs load :laugh:
Mark, 200 lbs of taut muscle.

I‘m stronger than I thought! But I must admit I do struggle with the 6/1 SOM flywheels.
Lister gives shipping figures of 1516lbs for the tank cooled 3kw 6/1 SOM and 1367lbs for the 4.5kw 8/1 SOM, although this is with the fabricated steel base and smaller remote box, which tend to be slightly lighter.

I recently shipped a 6/1 SOM with the cast iron base plate and accessories. It scaled around 1650 lbs. I did not know what the breakdown was for the individual heavy pieces though... the flywheels in particular.
BTW my bathroom scale only goes to 400# I believe, and it has a glass top so no way I could think of putting a flywheel on there! :laugh:

Like weighing a calf, you pick it up, stand on the scale, set it down and weigh yourself. difference is the object 8)

275 lbs X 2 flywheels + the load of the firing stroke !
Wow, imagine all that weight carried by two Bronze sleeve bearings at each end of the crank and just a micron film of oil between the crank and the bearing.
Makes one appreciate how important it is to keep clean oil in the crankcase. :o
With the roller bearing that the "modern" Listeroids have, one would expect the bearings to last forever if installed properly.

The generator flywheel is also likely significant for flicker reduction, given it's higher rpm.
Pity our Rajkot manufacturers don't make the SOM flywheels.

One option is to buy the "near solid" 10/1 and 12/1 flywheels and mount them on a 6/1.
Apparently this makes a significant difference.

Hmmmm...... 400lb weight limit of scale -235lb flywheel = your weight of no more than 125lbs !!!!!
If you weigh 125 lbs, and can lift a 275 lb flywheel onto a scale, I don't want to meet you pissed off in a dark alley....

Well, I am 180# but not picking up any 200# + flywheels these days... too hard on the back, let alone the aging muscle tone! :laugh:

I worked for a rather dicey contractor for a while. Wow, did he teach me a lot. One of the good things was to carry the tool to the job - not the job to the tool when possible. And I think the Greeks popularized the inclined plane innovation.
