got sufficiently poison and jump into the Chinese Engine bandwagon. the subject is a Yenben CF15 walk behind tractor with a JainDong 1110 engine and a rotary tiller.
after fueling and lube up, i hand cranked it and the first sign of serious trouble appear. there was heavy metal clanking noise internally. compression was good. doesnt sound like piston hitting valves. more like con rod bearing not properly fitted or a Lister CS having a loose gib key kind of trouble as there is strong surge forward motion follow by the noise. i dont know what is wrong but will definitely strip down engine later for examination.
the tractor come cheap though. about 1200 ex factory complete with rotary tiller. YenBen made millions of this annually and was the mainstay of rural Chinese agriculture machinery supplier. i bought this base on this fact. the engine come bone dry. it was not test run at the factory. there was no way to fill the lub oil unless the starter is removed by pouring into the dip stick hole. the engine is unnumbered. so is the fuel pump.
comparing to the LaiDong that i had supplied to John F, i have to say the LaiDong is a class above. will keep all updated as i progress.

Sure it wasn't the backlash in the counterbalance shaft, IP and governor drive gears? By all means pull the timing case and crankcase cover for inspection, but my Changchai S1100A2NM is pretty noisy when cranked.

You got that right! As compared to the rest of my Chinese diesel collection my Laidong from John is like comparing a Dursley built 6/1 to a Listeroid. They are indeed in a class of their own.

38AC, i was trying to get feedback on the LaiDong and in John's own word, he said "boring" as everything works. i am hoping similar feedback from you.
i was at LaiDong factory when these engines were assembled. i was left with the good assembly practise. prior to this, i visited the "Redstone" factory and the other changchinfa factories. i have to say nothing beat the LaiDong.
in mainland China, there is a saying for single diesel. you must get a LaiDong for anything size 195 and above or a 3 circles for anything size below 195. i will plan a trip to 3 circle to see for myself when time permit. but these 2 makes sales numbers is way below the chanchifa.
coming back to my JianDong, the IP squeak is incredible loud and long so this is another sign of trouble. the exhaust valve is in certainty hitting the piston on decompression and the clanking noise is likely to come from the 2 balancer shafts hitting each other at certain angle. will strip the engine this coming weekend for thorough check.

I have a few JiangDongs (size 175 and 180) with no problems.
Fairly good workmanship and finish.
I also have 2 Changfa's with which to compare the JiangDongs.

i think it is a lemon i got.
anyway, the knocking sound was now traced to a improper shimmed balancing shafts. this was sorted out and bearings changed. the injection was spill timed.
the engine start instantly on first kick without decompression using 2xT105 battery.

with the initial shortcoming sorted out, she is quite well behave now with little vibration across the rpm range. the twin balancing shafts helps tremendously.
so my personal conclusion is if you are looking for solid prime mover and willing to put in some time and effort in preparing it, the Chinese engine seems to be another viable option comparing to the varying quality from Rajkot.
the machining is not 1st class but it is true and centered. the casting is so so but i find no left over sand pocket. the shortcoming mainly attributed to poor assembly workmanship rather than the engine per se itself.
the real test will come this weekend when i load it up in the field.
