Title: First run on 50% waste crankcase oil
Post by: Eugen on March 28, 2010, 11:34:01 PM
As of March, 05, 2010 I started running my 6/1 on a diet of 50/50 crankcase oil and #2 furnace oil. I have abt. 20 hrs on the mixed fuel and have not seen any difference in the way it's behaved.  I run it from the original CS. tank with no heating of the mixed fuel, it has so far started without a hitch, with a temperature as low as 21F, electric start of course!! That said, I did remove the head before the start of the mixed fuel and noted the condition of the piston top and the injector. One thing I should mention is that I fumigate with propane on an intermittent basis, there was no prior plan in place with the fumigation of propane and I will continue to do so as I have done in the past.

The low level plan is to run it 10 hrs every week  (not acccounting for power outages) for the rest of the Summer. I will before the snow starts in the Fall remove the head again and check for carbon buildup if any. If at this time there is a carbon problem the rings will also be checked.

Hello Eugen,
I watch with interest.
Do you filter the wmo before use? Another de-coke method I have read about is water injection. Not sure how well it works on listers.

Hello bottleveg,

I leave the oil sit for about 6 months without disturbing it. Then siphoned from the top of the drum, run it through silica crystals to remove any water that might be lurking in the oil. Then filtered through a 10 micron bag filter into a clean container ready for use. There are two more filters on the listeroid, the original filter and a golden rod filter.
I'm working on a separate tank and filter system and should be operational in about a week.

I’m hoping to run my Lister on 100% wmo. I tried 1 micron filtered wmo in an idi 1.7 Isuzu engine. It ran well but coked up in a week. Maybe the Lister injector is more tolerant.

bottleveg,

I'm looking for one of those Isuzu engines, so far no luck.!
Did you run the Isuzu on 100% waste crankcase oil or a mix, another question, did you heat the fuel ?

The engine is fairly common in the UK, used in the Astra, Nova and Combo. Also available in 1.5L. I’m not sure what GM called them in the US.
The engine runes perfectly on 100% wvo until the weather starts to drop below 8C and then really needs a twin tank for starting.
I tried 50/50 diesel/ wmo. 50/50 wvo/wmo and 10/40/50 petrol/diesel/ wmo. All to no avail. In all cases the oil was heated, once the engine was warm, with a flat plate heat exchanger from the coolant system.
