Title: Changfa 170 or kubota EL300?
Post by: horsefly76 on February 23, 2008, 06:19:57 AM
I keep eyeballing a kubota EL300?

The kubota will run me $100-200 or so more and I deal with them every day at work.

Now the changfa I have read a LOT about, and I like it!

I know you guys will steer me to the changfa but I'm throwing out the question anyway.

I have been wanting to build a 12 volt battery charger/ ac gen for quite a while now. ::)

What kind of RPM's does the Kubota run at?  What's the expected longevity?

Kubota VS Changfa.

Thats like comparing a Toyota to a Yugo or Chery.

Hmm thats not fair to say.

Its some place between comparing a real RA Lister engine and a listeroid or comparing a Honday air cooled gas engine to the Chinese clones or Comparing a Haz diesel to their Indian clones

Only 100-200$ more for the Kubota? Is it NEW?
How much exactly would you pay for both engines?

These engines are very similar, for 100$ more I would get the Kubota.

Kubota: Better for mission critical applications, parts easier to find but more expensive
Changfa: Nice to learn and play, cheaper to afford, parts are a lot cheaper but make sure your dealer has them.

Do not expect either engine to last as long as a Changfa S195 or ZS1115.

BackRoad I am planing on running in the 1200-2000 rpm range and adjusting alternator output/rpm according to load.

I just brought home a 2500 watt gen head from work (power mite 110) that I would like to mate it to also.

The Kubota has about 300 hr's I thik this model is rated for 2,000 rpm  There are a few on E bay they are X military units for $500 plus shipping. Shipping to Tucson would be about $110

But the changfa is less money. I'm not too worried about longevity. altopro I have been looking at the units you have on E bay also.

A lot of our kubota's at work have 1 to 9,000 hr's with nothing major going wrong.

I have a 4.5 hp air cooled Chinese diesel but it is a higher strung 3,000 rpm and I want something liquid cooled with more of it's grunt on the low end. Plus it gives me an excuse to buy another engine ;D I just have to find a way to hide it from the little lady ???

Doug that is a good comparison, I drive a toyota tacoma with 207,000 worry free miles, solid as a rock. No knocks doesn't burn a drop of oil.  A yugo is well........ um....... a yugo :P

I know from what I have read that the changfa is a solid engine.

Sorry Pat but I have to disagree.

The Changfa is a clone of the Japanese engine. Still not clear on who made it first Yanmar or Kub and the connection to Germany has no proof.

I know the Kub has been produced since at least the 50's.

The Day the Chinese build a copy of a Japanese industrial engine built to the same tollerences and quality control I'll believe a Changfa is a match to a Kub.......

The currently produced Yanmar TF series.

Something German that is very simmilar in current production

Isn`t the block on the Kubota version aluminum alloy as opposed to the all cast iron of the Chinese versions?  Aluminum makes sense for portable applications for the weight savings but for a stationary I`d consider the all cast iron engine highly superior if all else were equal quality.

They apear to be iron at least some of them like the twin KND3 we were discussing off list a while back

I would go for iron over aluminum any day. Uncle Sam was very good to me this year so I think I will go for a changfa 8)

Had a few engines with aluminum block iron cylinder aluminum head that were nothing but a steaming pile's of crap :P

Well have to go now, little lady just called to tell me she ran out of gas 30 miles outside of town in the middle of nowhere >:( Buy her a new $26,000 car that gets 34 mpg and she "forgot" to put gas in the dam thing ???

or made sure it's a diesel car and have a couple of gallons of cooking oil in the back for emergency use.

FYI her old car got 15 mpg. New one gets 34 mpg @ 75 mph on the freeway. She left with about half a tank. She drove 200 miles out of town and back while I was at work. I work 11 hr a day. She passed 12 gas stations.on the way back alone.  I called her 2 times to remind her to get gas because she all ways forgets. How is that "my fault" again?

Ha ha ha!  No doubt Jens ;D

Jens you have any changfa or kubota ideas to comment on or were you just having a "gas" with the last topic :D

I have an EB300 Kubota setup with a Prestoline alternator and a Balmar Charge controller. Works super!!!!

$200  for an EL300 is GREAT! I'll take 2 of those myself!!

I burn about a pint an hour and usually run at 1800-2000 RPM. I am supremely happy with the Kub. I paid $499 for mine and plan to  buy  more for other stationary power jobs like domestic water transfer,  a firefighting pump, and running a chipper for brush. Maybe another for a spare.

I wouldn't fret about the aluminum.  My impression is that it is a very well designed unit, regardless the metal used!

OBTW, I wouldn't EVEN turn my nose up at a Yanmar TF.  My guess is that they are real all stars. Big heavy brutes like the Changfas but really precision made as the Japanese are noted for!

Well Kubota it is.

I decided slightly used Japanese was better than new Chinese. Engine will be here next week :)

Well the Kubota is a little gem!   :)

Started on 1st compression stroke. Engine runs strong with no smoking. Has a small radiator with a fan/ 4 amp generator on the side.

It has glow plug and a small "primer" pump that squirts fuel into the intake manifold. Something I have not seen yet in small diesels.

Just have fix a leaking petcock and general cleaning.  It was a good choice. 8)

what is the part number for the injector on the EL300 engine, or other engine models that use the same injectors?   i might be getting a el300 but its missing the injector
