Title: Sinker EDM fluid
Post by: Andre Blanchard on December 11, 2007, 05:01:53 PM
Has anyone burned EDM oil in a Listeroid or other engine?

I have a chance to get about 80 gallons of unused EDM oil for free.  Company switched brands and does not want to mix them and seems to think it will cost them to get rid of it.

We have to keep a log book of all the items we handle at work MSDS ......EDM fluid is in the list. They never give me one when I buy diesel but one exists for it. I do know edm oil burns! Let your tank level go down on a hot burn and oops a fire!

A coolant oil as I understand it.

Electron discharge machining a device that machines the part using and electricty to vapourize the steel you want removed....

They are pocket sized, fit in the palm of your hand and have a low, med and high setting that ranges from stun, kill and vapourize.

I saw an EDM`ing demonstration at BCIT a very long time ago at one of their recruitment open houses. That would have been about 1969 or 1970.  It was a DIY built machine. They were putting odd shaped holes in files and razor blades with cutting tools made from yellow brass incremented into the work by hand with a fine thread vernier crank.  The working fluid was kerosene.

EDMs are great.  Square hole, threaded hole in hardened tool steel, tap removal.
We always used copper(special alloy) or carbon(special something) for the electrodes.

Anyway it smelt like kerosene, burnt like kerosene, and made my face brake out like kerosene.   Not sure on the lubricating properties.

You might try this if it is virgin fluid (mix in a pint of oil per gallon) but if it is used I'd run away as fast as I could. Used edm fluid is loaded with metal fines which will eat up your injection pump in no time. My Elox EDM die sinker has huge filters but the fluid is still hard on the circulating pump seals, and its just a centrifugal pump. I'd hate to see what the fines and swarf would do to an injection pump. This fluid still has particles in it even after going through 3 stages of filters. Since the particles are so small I'd venture that they exist even at the micron level, since this is the size particle that the machine operates at.
