Always wondered.  Is Upstate NY an geographical area or a state of mind?  I have NEVER heard anyone say they lived in Downstate NY.

Uh oh.  Just noticed upstate NY has UPS in it. That curse is everywhere.  :'(

Us upstaters are constantly are constantly talking about the downstaters (i.e. flatlanders) who invade each summer. Nearly as much trouble as the Canadians.  ;)

Its both and rather complicated. There's a new house across the street from me that went for a high price comparatively to the neighborhood. I knew the new owners were from New Jersey.  If they drove up in a BMW SUV it would probably have been bad. They had a diesel pickup with a lot of tools in the back, good.

DKMC, I'm in Lk. George. There's another guy near Buffalo or Rochester too.

I’m in Orchard Park…just south of Buffalo…and I believe 6/1 in NY is in the Southern Tier.
Upstate NY is a generic term referring to everything outside of The City…anything west of Syracuse however, does not exist because its uncivilized wilderness, Appalachian type depravity, frozen tundra etc…

True Story:  My daughter brought some college friends (from The City) home last Thanksgiving. One of the girls looked out and asked about all the “dead space” out there. Umm…  “dead space”?   Yes…all that open land out there with nothing on it… Umm that’s farmland.  What’s it used for?  Umm...growing crops…corn and oats.  Seems like wasted space…wouldn’t it be easier to go to a store and get that stuff?  Umm…never mind…

It didn’t take my daughter very long to figure out The City is New York City…and if you’re from Long Island …that’s the first thing you tell anyone in a conversation…

I going out to the front porch…got some banjo pickin’ to do...

Joe

Bill,
You live in a nice part of the state up there.  I was up in your neck of the woods twice this summer, once to go to the indoor waterpark with the kids and another day we went up to the 6-flags.  Sure seems like the area outside those two venues is a lot more relaxed.  A big change from the Connecticut shore where I live.

We had a nice time up there and will be back.

Upstate NY is a frame of mind that comes to us in early spring after the 4 months of gray skies, not seeing the sun and random snow falls that are a result of living on the south western side of the great lake of Ontario.
I live in the Rochester area and have a 12/2 Metro gen set built over the last 2 yrs. Just got it put together and working in the shed and it was obvious that the space was MUCH too small. So I’m presently building an addition to provide a shop (man house) that I can tinker with it and tweak it to my satisfaction.
There are of corse a slue of other projects that are in progress that are calling to be done.

It’s always good to stop in to this site and check out what others are up to, It's an inspiration each time.

Good to hear there are others out there in the Upstate area.

Keep the bright lights on and remember don’t stare at the sun directly if it shows it self :o.

My "summer place" is so upstate in NY that I can walk to Canada (to escape).

People in the Center of the Universe think that upstate is 110th Street.

In no one's wildest dreams would they ever recognize that anything exists outside of "the city", so why would they even entertain the notion that they were "downstate", or "down" anything, even though they live in a sewer infested with vermin.

Apologies to any normal person who just happens to be stuck in the city.

Hi, I live in CNY between Syracuse and Binghamton and am working on a 6/1 Metro CHP system. I already have a couple of WVO vehicles and am planning on running my Listeroid on WVO also. Would be interested in sharing some ideas with locals and seeing what others have been working on.

Well hello southern cousin

There are a number of Lister owners in Ottawa, a short drive North, even a supplier of machines, JohnF, so you have a lot of experience close by

Welcome To the Addiction

JimB Hi there, I saw your post and I’m interested in your bio fuel system. I have made it in small batches but not full scale. Drop me a note if you get a chance I’d like to know what your methods are.

Hello again, it's been a loooong time.
Posting a reply here to bump this once again.
Any more NYS upstate (Syracuse, Binghamton, Rochester) folks out there playing with or
working on Lister or 'roid engines/generators?

I think the site is better about notifications now, I never used to get them.

I'll be relocating part time, to Milford, PA with my 6-1. The 20/2 will remain in Florida.

I'm from Brockport NY area. Have had a Metro 6/1 since 2004. I use it to run a 3kw PMG.   Ron

@rp48
Hello Ron
I'm nowhere your location though interested in your PMG.
I am also running a PMG with my listeroid, it is an Utterpower 3Kw unit. No problems, it just works.
Is yours also Utterpower, or did you find a different source?
Cheers
Hugh

Hi Hugh,  I got my PMG from George B. / Utterpower. As I remember, it was packed very securely in a steel box. It's working OK, load it with a 3 to 4kw, doesn't overheat, no brg. noise, just a mellow hum at 3600rpm. I have it wired for 120/240 volts. I try to balance the load when using 120v.. Overall, I'm very satisfied with it. Also have a couple of ST heads... 5 & 7.5kw. They also work fine, all I did to them was to change out the chinese brgs., and put in a better high quality diode bridge.
On another note, how did the Redstone manual work out for your friend? My Redstone is still running strong. Have it belted to my 7.5kw ST
head.I'm sure it could run a 10 or 12kw head with ease. Take care, Ron

Ron, I forgot that you passed on the Redstone manual to me so I could relay it on further........Thanks again for that. His 'stone is still functioning fine, it gets used only for power outages. They are relatively common here, mostly in winter with frequent windstorms, this year is an exception so far.
As for the PMG, my set-up is much the same as yours with the same results: it just works. By calculation, we should have a difficult time making 4Kw with a 6/1 as power, but I have measured the same output and with little voltage drop. They are an extremely good piece of gear. Shame they were of such limited production. Came in a steel box too. I was very fortunate to get 2 of them. The first has been in use for several years of (mostly) battery charging for our off-grid system. The other is intended to power my workshop and is belted to a Dursley 6/1 startomatic engine. I recently moved it , so is not operational ATM, another winter project....I should be out there working on it now.
Cheers
Hugh

rp48, Hugh

Curious why you fellows went with the PMG units?
I do remember seeing them back when Utterpower was selling them.
One thing I am interested to know is whether they eliminate the flicker caused by our thumpers?

cheers,
veggie

Why PMG? They were/are high quality units made to a high spec. No diodes, no brushes, no electronics, no voltage regulator. Really simple, rugged, overengineered. Plug-and-play. So far mine have been completely reliable. At the time, they were more costly than the usual STs, but have proven to be well worth the extra cost. They were discontinues because of the increasing non-availability of consistently  high quality magnets.
Sadly, they don't eliminate the flicker.
Oh, and they are EMP proof.

Here are 4 links to some archived pages of the Utterpower site. The first 2 look same, but are 2 different pages.

https://www.utterpower.com/pmg_testing.htm

Here's a link to company in Poland that makes PMGs, I have no idea of their cost/quality/availability. Their smaller ones look very similar to the Utterpower generators

Hugh

I am from the Danbury area of Connecticut and go antiquing often in " upstate NY".

Moderator's note: Let's not get all twisted up about a spot of geography. I've seen the distances you Americans will go to get hardware, or meet up with each other, etc. If Connecticut was the other side of NY City I could easily understand the responses this thread started getting - but frankly, it's right next to NY State, and I'm sure "deisel" meant well when he said he often goes upstate NY. And assuming "upstate" is everywhere north of the mid-line.... it's kinda in the ball park. So.... onwards, calmly. Thanks.

I'm about 2.5 hrs south east of Buffalo. I do wish I was closer. I think we'd have good conversation.
