Link to a site about American and British pipe....
Turns out you might be able to use teflon tape to seal, but read the PDF file.

i join npt and bsp water pipe all the time.  i have not tried using teflon tape.  i use hydraulic sealant - the type they use in small diameter gas mains at threaded connections.  my experience with teflon tape is not good in any environment with any potential of cathodic action or where the water is corrosive in any way.

proper adaptor 1" male BSP to 1" male NPT is Adaptall pn 9042-16-16    That's what I bought for my 6-1 GTC engine.

oooppps!!! that's 1" male BSP to 1" female NPT, jus' screw it into the flange and then screw in a king nipple...works super and no mickeymouse leaks.
