Smoke billowing out of intake.

LR1MICK:
Hello

Got the LR1 out today and decided to giver her a run, however it started kicking backwards and when she did start billowed blacksmoke out the air filter?? So i shut it down.

It is a conventional clockwise rotation engine.

Why has this happened?

dieselspanner:
The short answer is probably 'timing'

the longer one is that when it hit the compression stroke it bounced back just after the injector popped, when it went all the way around, almost two revolutions to the compression stroke from the other side it fired, passed TDC and continued to run.

The injector would have popped, albeit in the wrong position and the sequence repeated it's self.

Without a lot of thought, for which I don't have time, 'cos I'm off up the pub in a few minuets, there's probably less charge air when the motor runs backwards, leading to an overfueling situation, hence the black smoke.

Check the timing, and if that's ok crank harder to get it past TDC in the correct direction!

Cheers Stef i will check the timing as i havent disturbed that. Its never done this before!

I agree with what Stef said. The only other thing I can think of is the decompressor lever needs adjusting if it is not opening the exhaust valve during cranking, alternatively you might have a build up of oil or other fluid in the cylinder, this would increase the compression to the point where you could not swing it passed TDC. Now that it has fired (all be it backwards) that problem should have cleared itself.

Let us know how you go.

It's a bit of a long winded for a link but there's some good photo's, I was on the bar stool on the left for a couple of hours
