Hi Im new here i just got a Lister SL1 !!!!!
« on: September 21, 2018, 06:59:53 AM »
Hi i am new to these engines, I have a Lister SL1 made in 1961. Im trying to get it to slow down the RPM because when it starts it goes full throttle When the switch is in the run position ,unless i hold the switch manually towards the stop position. i tried adjusting the threaded speed control protruding from the case i turned it clockwise but it did nothing.  on the stamp it says 1800 RPM but when its running it seems to be running balls to the wall. I dont realy plan on using it for anything other than display so i want it to run very slow. is that possible ?  thanks in advance[img]

I have one of these engines you can slow it down by changing weights and springs on the governor

You can slow it down in 200 rpm steps to 750 rpm but you will need new governor weights, speeder spring and 2 governor springs.and don't forget to open up your exhaust valve clearance to 0.006 at speeds below 1200 rpm.

so the only way to slow it down is to change the weights and springs? Are those parts available   ???
If i hold the run switch towards stop, the engine runs slower i put a penny in  between the catch and it runs slow is that harming the engine?

it seems like a runaway diesel with the switch in the run position.

The link I added is to a pdf manual you can read the exact method to slow the engine. Where are you based? In America diesel g man of this site would have a lot of spares in the UK they are readily available and you can buy parts by post from anywhere in the world

No sorry they are different manuals. Contact diesel gman (Gary that runs this site) for parts in the US. I had a link to the manual for that engine I will search for it or I could email it to you if you send me a private message. You can also buy parts from the UK Sleeman and Hawken is one company that sells Lister parts but postage would be high.

750 to 1300 rpm uses common governor weights and governor springs but 3 different speeder springs.   Governor weights part No 201-10730  Governor springs Part No 201-10821   Speeder springs 750-850rpm  Part No201-10901  850-1000rpm Part No201-10903  1100-1300rpm Part no 201-10900
