While you have the head cover off could you get me a picture of the profile of the valve pusher pad.  Put a little ruler or (American) coin in the picture at the same focal length so I can figure that radius.  I'm making a fixture to precision grind those tomorrow.

I'm rather curious about whether the actual Lister pad has a rolling-contact profile or not... Please share the results.  Likewise, balance data from the flywheels would be useful.  I think the technique would be to pull a wheel, put it onto some kind of wobble plate (bubble) balancer, and then make note of 1) the amount of weight required on the rim to level the wheel, 2) where this weight is in relation to the keyway, and 3) where the keyway is on the crank.  For extra goodness, repeat on the other flywheel and report any variance.

I know that SOM flywheels are heavier than plain 6/1 flywheels, but the balance data should be the same in either case, since the rotating and reciprocating masses of the crank/rod/piston should be the same.

Well, I'm not equiped to pull and balance, and would not know where to start.  I'm an IT guy, just getting into all this DYI stuff.  But I have stun the wheels and they seem to run smooth and the entire engine sits nicely... I'll know better once I start it up

Mine did not come with the Wall box, and  these were not attached to anything.  I applied 12 v across it and noticed that the plunger popped up.  So how would I best work it?

I figured that once the SOM started to spin up it would produce some  power causing the plunger to rise pulling the exhaustlifter and the fuel rack.  The motor should be ready to start them but I would still need to  manually open the rack... am I correct??

The micro swtich seems to be holding the Governor arm up, can I take it off?

Also I noticed that the governor arrangment seems to be jamed up and it does not move much.  Cant see how to adjust it.

I was thinking that if I had a normally closed switch, then opening it would de-energise the solonoid causing the engine compression to open and the fuel rack to close stopping the engine.  Closing it and energizing the Genhead with a battery to get it to spin up, which would energize the solonoid allowing the engine to start.

If I am wrong, out to lunch, let me know... I just guessing here :)

Do you have a marina or larger boat builder/servicer near OR Sailboat place?  A lot of them have onboard engine driven generators.  They work very much like a SOM.  Pull the light switch, or the frig. comes on, or you turn on a fan and the gen. cranks up and lights the place.  They have a load sensing system much the same.  A good electrician for such a place should be able to set you up with a box to do the same things as the original SOM box.

So you flick the DC light on, it causes a draw from the battery, which causes the battery to start turning the Genhead, and the solonoid is activated because of the draw.  Turn off the DC light, it kills the solonoid that turns off the fuel .  OK.  Does it matter what size of draw is there?  Also, what recharges the battery?  I take it the original box had a battery charger as well??

Cheers

Andrew,
Mighty nice colours, does it light up in the dark? No ones going to bump into that without seeing it. Bravo for originallity. You are moving along fast.
You mentioned you were working on your rad set up & so am I. I noted that you got a Dodge 98 Caravan rad. rleonard has one from a Dodge too (looks pretty good on his Copermine picts). I was wondering what you are planning  for the expansion tank. Any good ideas in the works?
I am planning on a similar radiator for summer with a bypass to the old steam radiator system in the room above for the winter but am looking for ideas on the expansion tank. Looks like rleonard fabricated his out of some kind of sewer pipe with cap & brass fitting along with a sight line for the liquid level. Nice set up he has. binnie

Dave,
I think we all knew whom you ment. Pitty we aren't getting any of his comments on Andrew's restoration project, but then on a clear night you can almost hear his input from accross the pond. I for one fondly miss the opinionated sod. I imagine he will forgive Andrew for his liberites with the colour scheme since it shouldn't affect original performance & anyway!  Binnie

I just got my cooling system welded together today.  I'll take photos to clarify, but will describe it first.

I mounted a five column steam radiator outside the building on an existing concrete block three feet high. (It's a true 'yard' of concrete.)  The radiator is standing at right angles to the wall and is plumbed straight through the wall with galvanised pipe.  Inch and a half on top and inch and a quarter on the bottom.

These stubs come through the wall to the engine,  BUT,  the bottom line, the one going to the engine intake, tees into a ten gallon propane tank, near the bottom,  with a 24 inch 'neck' sticking up to radiator water level.  That's the filler neck and will have a clear sight tube running up the side.   This neck will have a welded fitting to recieve the steam, if any, from the top steam tap of the radiator.  THis will keep the system air free except for an inch at the top of the filler pipe where an overflow tube goes to a small plastic tank like a car has.

With a little fluid in this overflow tank the system becomes a 'closed loop', thermo-siphon system with a small radiator, but a BIG bottom 'radiator hose'.

I'm going to weld in a couple more small fittings in the tank in various handy places case I want to install a thermometer or auto cut-off switch for if the water runs out....

What it does is add ten gallons of cooling capacity to what was just a four gallon radiator.  On hot days it'll need the extra coolant and on cold days the ten gallons inside helps heat the room.
.... or that's what's planned anyhow.  Pictures soon.

I'm going to use an expansion tank from a Caravan :D  Why mess with success.  The rad has the bypass already there, why rethink a system that already works.

I'll post the rad shots once I have it set up.  should be in a day or two

Guy is not gone.  He posted he would be out for a while because he was moving.  For those who don't know that is John Deer Green and John Deer Yellow, and it is brighter in the picture

I read that as GF, not till you posted did I realize it was wrong.  They would be be going nuts knowing that it was not Lister Green.  I found that the original green, which there where still parts left, under decades of oil and grime, to be too dark.  JohnF says that Tremclad Hunter Green is a good match, and it was very close to the handle that he gave me.  I have a JohnDeer Tractor, so I had the paint, and it is easy to get out here in the country.  Part of the reason for the yellow is to help define the danger area, the other is it will show all the oil leaks.... dark on yellow :)  (Sounds like a porn film)

The paint has settled in nice and two coats did the trick, it looks like it was sprayed on, instead of hand painted.  Maybe I can get a job in India :p, but I don't do metallics

I can't believe you've done so much in shuch a short time. You must have little elves working on it all night. When I first saw the picts off the truck I thought it was a basket case. It's amazing how well it all cleaned up & looks like new. Can't wait to hear it run. I bet you can't either. That's an impressive achievement in a few short weeks! Love the base. Wish someone would start moulding some copies for the Listeroid dept. Saw some on the Uk sites with side pannels attached to run off accessories from the fly wheels. Great job, binnie
