Lister 12/2 flywheel question
« on: December 05, 2017, 10:58:07 PM »
Hey folks,

Today I've been looking at the flywheels for the lister 12/2. The LHS flywheel is just as I'd expect, with the weight and keyway opposite the piston throw. However the RHS flywheel has been repaired and the keyway and counterweight is at an odd position. I've looked on the forum and youtube for flywheel setup on a twin, but there's little guidance.

So is this repaired flywheel for the scrap heap and do I need to source another?

Comments appreciated!

That second flywheel has been bored, and a sleeve inserted. This could have been done to repair damage to the boss, possibly from being loose and wearing the hole over time.
I certainly wouldnt scrap it. In fact, by rotating the flywheel slightly in relation to the crank throws, it gives a good opportunity to arrange it for balance and smoother running.
In fact, the way it  has already been offset  this may have been done at some stage. At a guess, I would say the initial position was adjusted temporarily by those two grub screws, and then pinned to its final position by the axial threaded  pins, or in this case, they look like allen head bolts.

Hi Samo. very interesting modification, any idea what this was originally used to drive? could be something off balance, hence the mod. If you were to remove the two grub screws you could rotate it back to it`s original orientation then drill and tap it before re-fitting grub screws. Wouldn`t recommend running it like it is as it will probably walk itself out of the shed. but if you are very brave/stupid I would love to see what this does for flicker on a lighting setup.

The modification looks pretty nice to me.  Based on the above observations and the quality of the modification I'd suggest that it may have been done to smooth out the vibrations.  If done as a repair I'd suggest that there wouldn't be any change in alignment.  The amount of work kind of boggles my mind.

The twin flywheels are different from each other in how the weight is oriented to the keyway.  One is the same as a CS single, the other is opposite, The weight always being opposed to the crank throw on that side. The taper lock bushing is a commonly seen repair here in the states but whomever installed that one botched the job when they didnt properly orient the offset weight to the keyway in the bushing.

Thanks for the comments!

So as Murphy would have it this repaired flywheel is the difficult to obtain flywheel, the good one is common to the single cylinder Listers.

I'm going to take the insert down to the local machine shop and see what it will cost to make another similar insert, or maybe machine it to fit a standard taper lock but this time put the keyway in the correct location for the 12/2.

If that turns out too expensive then I'll source a 6/1 flywheel and get a second keyway cut.

Given this will take some time, and I wanted to try and run the engine for the first time this weekend, I'll give it a low RPM spin up. Even with this "fix" I doubt the balance will be worse than my Roid!

So the keyway needs to be rotated a couple of spokes to the left?

Yep a few! The keyway is supposed to be opposite the weight on this flywheel.

Too bad the person that re-manufactured this wheel isn't available to re-tune it now.  Looks like it got pretty hot sometime.
