Lister 12/2 Rebuild Update

Hey Folks,

Here's the latest update on my 12/2 rebuild. Fuel injector pumps and linkages all working, however one of the injectors isn't outputting anything. So that's the next job.


For some reason I'm getting errors when trying to upload to the LEF Gallery (some kind of file permission error) So here's a link to the latest stage of the build.

Yes, thanks...  I hand painted the lettering, but it's raised (cast) printing, so that made it pretty easy!

Thanks for the inspiration. It was a lot more work than I thought it would be.  But then maybe I made it harder for myself going down the fully painted route. Getting the balance right between fully OCD and actually completing the thing.... that's the challenge!

Did the Lister engines come out of the factory with gold lettering, or is it your own personalized touch?

I can't take credit for the gold lettering idea - maybe they came from the factory that way, however I saw it on a Lister at a local stationary engine display and liked it.

She RUNS again! but only on one side. 

I'm losing compression on the right side, it seems the COV is leaking. I have too much compression to turn it over by hand, but i only get billowing smoke from the exhaust and the hissing of gas from the COV rather than ignition. it's worst in high compression setting and slightly better in the low compression setting, but it still leaks.

I was able to remove the other COV but not this one. Even took the head to the local machine shop and they couldn't remove it either. I've tried heat cycles + my 1m long shifter on it, with a decent extension handle but it's locked solid.

Is there a sacrifice to the diesel gods I need to make?

Maybe a replacement head... maybe dismantle and use a torch to heat her up really well.

Hi Samo, don`t know where you live but if it is winter there and you have a wood burning stove chuck it in there overnight. Please remove valves rocker gear and etc. first. Should come out clean as after. Not sure if it will damage the valve seats and guides but they are designed to run hot.

Or, now the head is bolted down, remove the handwheel, and weld a steel bar to the COV body. That will give LOTS of leaverage, and by hammering  the shit out of it while maintaining pressure, you will get it to move, hopefully without damaging the head.
You have nothing to loose.

Grab a can of "plus gas", spray liberally, leave to soak, spray again, now try tightening the COV (with whatever cheater bar/massive spanner/etc. you've got. If it moves, you're away; you'll find that although stiff, it should screw right out.

I know, I know, there are some around here who think these penetrating fluids are snake oil. However, as I say to anyone who asks, I dismantled, bolt by bolt, a 1977 Jaguar XJS which had been sitting outside, not moved, for nearly 20 years, and I only snapped one bolt. Even the ones which looked like they were more iron oxide than iron, yielded to the plus gas. I swear by the stuff (and very rarely at it).
