LISTER LPA AT HIGH ELEVTION
« on: July 31, 2017, 02:55:56 AM »
[I RECENTLY PURCHASED A MILITARY GENERATOR WITH A LISTER PETTER LPA ENGINE THAT DID NOT RUN.  AFTER REPLACING THE FUEL LIFT PUMP AND ALL THE INJECTOR PUMPS IT STARTS AND RUNS FINE.  THE PROBLEM IT IS PUTTING QUITE A LOT OF BLACK SMOKE.  I AM RUNNING INJECTOR CLEANER THROUGH IT BUT DOES NOT SEEM TO BE HELPING.  I TESTED IT AT ABOUT 50 % LOAD AND IT PERFORMED  FINE.  I AM OPERATING IT AT 7400 FT ELEVATION.  THE MANUAL SAYS IT WOULD HAVE REDUCED POWER ABOVE 4000 FT BUT DOES NOT INDICATE ANY TYPE OF ADJUSTMENT.

MY QUESTION IS WHERE SHOULD I START TO TROUBLE SHOOT THE PROBLEM?  IS IT INJECTORS, TIMING OR WHAT?  ANY HELP WOULD APPRECIATED.

Hi.
Your caps lock key is stuck ON.

Black smoke is too much fuel ,  bad timing, bad spray pattern or too much load
your job at altitude, is to limit how much load is applied to the generator, so YOU don't overload it.

Are there re-time instructions to apply to the new pumps you installed ?

and I've heard minus 3-4% per thousand ft of altitude

Black smoke indicates an overload... or a fuel injection problem. How much load are you applying to this set?

At 7400 feet you will have to derate about 28% to stay within rated capability of that set.

As far as timing is concerned... an assumption is made that you kept the same shim packs with each CYLINDER. Those are specific to the cylinder as the pumps themselves are all built to a standard precise dimension.

thanks for the suggestions.  the new pumps came with the same shim pack as was on it.  i am operating it with no load or 50

% load.  the turbo sounds like a good solution. any suggestions on what turbo might fit.

Lister used a small Garrett model for their LPWT4... GT1544. Kubota has an even smaller one for their 3-cylinder diesel.

New pumps do not come with any shim packs and there is not a high probability that multiple engines will have the exact same dimensions.
Timing is fairly critical on these little temperamental beasts!
