LT1 Intermittant Overspeeding
« on: February 20, 2017, 10:08:21 AM »
Hi not been on here for a while  but just acquired a "new" piece of kit.
Benford Pedestrian Roller with LT1 Engine
Everything seems to work OK except intermittently when on load the engine will race away and chuck out clouds of grey/black smoke then after a few seconds returns to normal. and suggestions appreciated. :dizzy: other than that it appears to be fine, starts reasonably well, ticks over fine.

It sounds like you may have a tight spot somewhere on the governor mechanism / linkage. If you remove the inspection cover immediately below the injector pump. This will give you access to the injector pump end of the governor linkage, you will then be able to move the linkage through the full range of its movement with your finger you will also feel the resistance from the governor springs as it is a fixed speed engine (for that application). Any tight spots will then become apparent.

There are a number of places within the governor assembly (mounted on the end of the camshaft) that any binding or wear can start up a problem of the sort you mention. Some of these use a plastic hub that can easily get worn as well as having many other potential wear points. The wire linkage to the pump might allow you to feel for stiff spots, but you will have to remove the front gear cover to see the majority of the governor parts. Once a problem of this sort comes up, replacing the governor parts is the usual attack.

OK will check that but I am not sure, The smoking precedes the increase in revs and obviously takes a while to clear after it has returned to normal speed, is it possible that it is running on sump oil fumes?

Hi Parklands,

If the beast has an oil bath filter, check that it has not been over filled... It might be sucking in a bit of oil from there causing it to take off every now and then.....

Cheers

It would be rare for one to have worn bad enough to run on sump fumes and still be able to start and perform normally most of the time... check your crankcase vacuum to tell something about ring/valve condition.

If your fuel pump is being forced into the over-fuel (excess-fuel) full-rack position, then it could make quite a bit of black smoke while it is trying to come up to the new speed. Revs usually take just a little while to match governor demand as it changes and that lag usually creates excess fuel for a short while.
