Stumbled on this video and wanted to share it...
Lovely old Lister engine working relentlessly in a desert field pumping water from a Well.
Beautiful !

That is officially the Middle of Nowhere.  Wonder when it last had an oil change?

I'm not so sure about middle of nowhere, there appears to be both power and phone lines in the video.

As for the last oil change, it looks to have been recently judging from the pool of black crud on the ground.

I do love that thump thump sound however, one of the best I've heard in my headphones.

I wondered if it would be a son of a gun to start having to rotate that pump stem as well as the motor or would the momentum of everything actually make it an easy starter?

What do you think?  Is the black smoke puffs just an indication of hard work or a hard life?

Another storm blasting in, and the Metro 6/1 is still going, spinning the alternator and doing what it's supposed to do.  I'm just doing oil, fuel and water injection, not going to mess with a good thing.

Hey Glort....

Well spotted re the accent!!

Went and looked at it again - The best I could come up with judging by the land is somewhere, probably on the west side of the Karoo....

Occasionally, due to the high cost of line/rental, farmers that have power almost at their doorstep do not tie into the grid for irrigation, particularly if it is only for occasional irrigation or to fill a dam for a few livestock. It is not unheard of, by any means, to have a farmer that will transport a pump/engine around his farm and fill the dams on demand, in fact, my housemate who had a smallholding on the outskirts of our town used to do just that to get water from the dam in the lower sections up to his reservoir next to his house... But he used a much smaller Yamaha style portable centrifugal pump... About once or twice a week....

(And no, that thumper in the vid....Its not one of mine....Lol)

Cheers

I clicked on the youtube user and looked at his profile - he claims to be in South Africa, which would explain a lot.
