12- 2
« on: June 29, 2016, 07:11:37 PM »
Just located a 12 - 2 number 5831229. 12 hp @ 650 rpm. Waiting for the guy to get back to me regarding a price  :-\. Anyone know how to date these beasts? The chap had it belt driving a crusher plant but retired it when he upsized to a larger plant. He did cover under the rocker covers with grease and remove the pumps and injectors with the intention of overhauling them but as he had no further use for the engine shelved that plan. Hopefully he can relocate them. We did find one pepper pot for the exhaust and the starting handle on a quick scout through the shed and he is sure he has all the bits for it somewhere close by. Even a gasket set as well. We shall see.

My dating skills are not 100% but I think that number breaks down to
Engine number (583)  model (12/2)  year of manufacture 1950 + (9) = 1959

Having the spec number helps to confirm dates/

Regarding price, here is an example at the rougher end of the market:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lister-CS-10-2-12-2-twin-stationary-engine-barn-find-restoration-project-spares/112041576636

This is the third time this item has appeared, with a price drop on each occasion. I presently have a watch on it, purely out of interest to see how far it drops before someone takes the plunge and buys it.

For any potential bidders, be aware that the comment the seller makes regarding flywheels is incorrect. Although single cylinder flywheels will fit, one of the flywheels will not be correct as far as static or dynamic balance is concerned ( although a bodge, it could be corrected by having a new key way cut 180 degrees from the existing key way in one of the flywheels) .

On the plus side it would appear this engine does come with a lot of used spares (seem to be mostly cylinder blocks and heads)

Location has a huge bearing on what such treasures are worth.
Kevin,
I could put the most of that pile to very good use!!
Here in the land of few Listers I have TWICE bid up similar "piles" that could be built into a twin cylinder CS but was outbid. I am ashamed to admit how high I bid on one of them but somebody else wanted them worse than I.  Some day I will own a CS twin,, someday :-[

Have offered the guy US$ 600 (about 14 million pounds at todays rate  ;D) which he has agreed to but is still unable to locate the pumps and injectors so that may have to change. Re dating, I thought these only started production in 1961 ? Nothing about spec on the plate, only the number, horsepower and revs.
