Newby: Lister CS boat owner
« on: April 29, 2015, 10:09:39 AM »
Let me introduce myself: I'm Gert-Jan, living in the Netherlands and one of my hobbies is small canal boats to cruise on the local river. I started with a small boat with a Farymann engine but pretty soon started to look for a boat with a slow speed engine.
I came across this boat with a Lister CS and was hooked. It took the previous owner some time to get the engine running. He eventually recplaced the cilinder head and fitted new piston rings.
The boat arrived last week and I only used it twice since then so I still have to figure some things out. It's a whole other thing then the small Farymann engine!

I hope to learn a lot here at this forum, sure a lot of questions will come up!

Your boat looks very nice, Gert-Jan.
How is the vibration?

I had a diesel (Volvo twin cylinder - hand start with big flywheel) in a small timber boat. I discovered one thing that was a big advantage over petrol engines.
It would start and run reliably even if completely drenched in very wet weather.

Hello Gert-Jan.
Hallo Gert-Jan.

Baie mooi enjin! Dit is altyd lekker om die enjins te sien regte werk doen. Om 'n CS in 'n boot te hê is effens anders as wat meeste hulle voor gebruik.
Nice engine! It's always nice to see these engines do some real work. Having a CS in a boat is a little different than what most of use them for.

Volgens die blad http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/EngineDating/Dating.htm het jy 'n 1939 model.
According to this sheet http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/EngineDating/Dating.htm you have a 1939 model.

Stel jou video kamera op agter op die boot en vat ons vir 'n ry!
Set up your video camera on the back of the boat and take us for a ride!

Is the cooling water salt or fresh?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Vibration is pretty good; yes, she shakes but it doesn't get annoying.

The engine is direct cooled, fresh water. Still have to learn how to manage it though. Maybe a thermostat will make live easier.

Very nice.... there are some videos on YouTube showing someone puttering around in a CS 8/1 powered small boat - looks & sounds lovely.

I've just bought a Lister JP4 out of someone's boat, a sweet runner by all accounts, it's the original engine for the boat. Picking it up next Friday :D
Cheers!

Gert,

Would you please post some pics showing how you connected the engine to the propeller shaft?

Here some pics of the transmission (a Dutch Rijsdijk) and prop shaft and other parts of the drive gear:

Nice belt arrangement... good illustration for proper use of a spring tensioned idler pulley. Anticlockwise rotation is assumed - from the pictured viewpoint.

Thanks for the pictures!

Re: Newby: Lister CS boat owner - COV question
« Reply #12 on: May 27, 2015, 12:53:56 PM »
Well, used the boat quite a lot the last few weeks. What a joy and other boat owners really seem to like it!

Did some work on it as well; put some fresh SAE30 oil in it, replaced the V-belts, checked the water pump and ordered a brass water filter housing.

The COV is leaking quite badly, especially when it's on low compression. I want to replace it by a fixed one which sets the compression ratio at 1:17 (with glow plug) from stationaryengineparts.

Just a question; does the inner part of the original COV have to me removed from the head or can I just screw out the original one and replace it directly?

It is my understanding that your full COV assembly will have to come out including the inner valve for the COV replacement plug to be used. There are some variations in the parts designs though. Some people have had great difficulty in removing the inner part, and some of them pop out without too much trouble. Just use your engine compression to force it out... maybe.
