barn find lister
« on: February 14, 2015, 08:52:18 PM »
Hi all
I am new to this forum and am from Hampshire, England.
I have recently been given a Lister cs 6/1 that was found in a barn, this one is rad cooled. When I got it I thought it was seized but on further inspection I found it was full of water, I let the water out and the piston moved easy so gather the water had gone down either the exhaust or air cleaner as both just had upright pipes open to rain. It was sat for about forty years I am told.
Anyway the engine is nearly up together now (just waiting for some decent weather) to get on with it. What I could do with though is some info on the date of it if anyone knows how to identify it. The info on the plate says NO 180751R2, SPEC-, HP 6, RPM 650.
Thanks all in advance
Paul

According to this : http://www.stationary-engine.co.uk/EngineDating/Techdata.htm   looks like 1935.

According to the reference given 6/1 was built 1962 to 1974... but it could have had its rating (and serial plate) changed from a 5/1 (via speed change), and thus be production dated 1930 thru 1962. If I had to guess from the data given, I would have to say it was originally a 5/1 built in 1952.

The R denotes radiator cooled and the following 2 indicates 1952 (1950+2) build. The other numbers are at a guess 1807'th 5/1 built in that year, 5/1 being the historical engine type before revs were increased from 600 to 650 rpm early in that decade. Note it was not unusual for Lister to hold onto generic/historical engine coding even though it didn't reflect power output at the higher rpm.

ETA: I understand the official renaming of engines to reflect hp took place in 1962 when the 8/1 (8hp @ 800rpm) was introduced, although the 6/1 remained in production until 1974. This might explain confusion.
