Genuine Lister VA for sale in CO
« on: October 04, 2014, 05:54:16 AM »
This is a complete running set. I even have a genuine spare cylinder and head as they are apparently getting rare. All other parts (barring the cowling, which make it a VA and not a CS) are the same as a CS.

Link for video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKGAzrfV23M

PM me with inquiries.

Thanks

Great to see a VA running with all the original SOM electronics and mechanicals!
I was surprised that it is essentially the same as the CS, and that despite the air cooled cylinder, it sounded about the same, at least in the video.

What a gem!

They are rated at 7.5 HP @ 850 RPM and the SOM sets are rated 4.25 KVA.

Not quite  ;)

The crankcase on a VA has a different stud configuration for the cylinder barrel and cylinder head, the VA has 5 x 5/8" BSW studs compared to the 4 x 3/4" BSW studs for the CS

Also the rocker pedestals differ, in that there are two pedestals on a VA, verses one for a CS.

Sounds like it was stopping by lifting a valve. Do they all do that? I assume it cuts the fuel too.
Owned; Lister ST1, ST2, JP4, LD1 & 2x Blackstone ERS8. Petter AA1, AC2 and still up for it !!!

@Blue
Yes, Start-Os have a solenoid that engages/disengages the valve lifter at the same time as operating the fuel lever.

The SOM must do decompression on stop, as it only inserts a spacer in the moving exhaust valve, it does not actually lift the exhaust valve.

Good stop insurance for a stuck rack, too.

I found with my VA, that under prolonged heavy loading,  the exhaust port would overheat and carbonise any oil present  in the valve guide, causing the valve to stick open and be slammed shut by the rising piston..........   Some valve lifter.

The symptoms you describe IMHO are caused by the exhaust valve guide not having a shroud unlike its CS counterpart.

Sounds about right, this exhaust valve sticking problem also occurred with an Armsrtong Siddely AS1 and a Petters ACI........       Probably more to do with overloading than any inherent fault.

Thanks for the correction. I forgot about the studs.

Hello Startomatic,

Yes the injector assembly is identical to the CS 8-1 engine. When you fit the injector you will notice that it locates in a finned aluminium cooling shroud. This normally remains in the cylinder head, but can become stuck onto the end of the injector due to carbon build up. Be careful if you have to remove it from the injector, as it is surprisingly delicate and is easily damaged.
