What do i have here
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:56:34 AM »
Got me this 3 cyl Lister gen set last week.
Engine is loose but hasn't run for some years. The Generator is not making power i was told,..(no power from the exiter)
It is also missing the control panel and gauges

Name plate on the engine side cover says... 3864ST3A29-09.
Plate on the gen head says...
Synchronous generator.
Made by ..BBC..(Brown Boveri Canada)
Serial # C26-0302-902
1800 RPM
Exiter 42 V
This is a brush less generator

Your engine is the venerable ST3... very good workhorse and all parts readily available.

I am not familiar with Brown Boveri.

I think what Glort is trying to say is that Brown Boveri were swallowed and are now part of the ABB group and he is right they are no small group altho' I doubt if any of the modern engineers there would know the first thing about something made eons ago. They are all computer boffins nowadays not practical chaps like us.  ::)

You might try ABB's web site

www.abb.com

Poke around there and see if you can find any manuals.  Do you have a model number for your generator?  You can also try a google search.

I'm not afraid to take anything apart.
I am sometimes afraid I'm not going to get it back together.

ABB is what resulted from the merger of Swedish ASEA and Brown Bouveri & Cie of Switzerland.

There are specialist distributors worldwide who deal with the individual sections of products from both companies, we deal with ABB in Coventry UK for their switchgear.

There will be information around, it's just finding it, and it may not have been made by BBC  (Brown Bouveri & Cie) in the first place, they may have bought it in.

Just as Marathon bought part-built engines from Lister to assemble into its own gensets, BB Canada probably bought that set in from someone like Marathon.

They were a bit big to set up a small generator operation I would have thought, their business was big machines.
