Condolences to Stan Bakken.
An expensive and disheartening mess to clean up.
I would love to know how many hours on this engine, operating loads, other details, etc.
Hope I , and everyone else never  finds themselves in that unenviable situation!
Cheers,
Hugh

I'd bet it busted a cam gear and the pieces jamed in the gear train and broke the case. Ouch!!!

Is he a member ?   I sure don't want to see anything like that in my engine shed.

Thanks guys, I havent pieced everything together yet but think maybe bolts came loose on crankshaft weights? Found one weight laying on the floor by itself.

Engine has over 7000 hours on it, I put an hour meter on in 2011 it shows 3600 hours. I installed the engine in 2008 so ran 3 years before hour meter. We live off grid and also make Bio diesel so it gets used alot.

My friend Troy at Eco-Diesel in Lethbridge Alberta has another one waiting for me.Hope to be back in business by the weekend.

I just had the engine cover off a week ago to check the oil sumps for signs of casting sand. I usually rotate the flywheels and check for issues. Non were found. It was running fine this morning came back an hour later to this.

Thanks for the update! Mine's up to 1750 hrs and going strong. So was that an internally balanced 6/1? Did it have a bronze idler?

Yikes, that is a severe failure indeed! I hope you are able to diagnose cause and effect for this one.

To my knowledge you cant buy just an engine block from India. Cant remember where I read it or exactly why but something to do with export policy in India.  Gary would know LOTS more about this than I do.

The push rod inside the engine case really caught my eye.  Perhaps it got there through the big hole rather than dropping down through the lifter?

In a break down situation, and I think this qualifies as a break down situation, I always suspect the last procedure or repair.

Oops!  I forgot to write WOW!

Best bet is to buy a full crankcase... India can export individual pieces and castings but their export tax policy favors completed assemblies (i.e. full engine) rather than parts. I believe at last check the price for a completed engine vs. all of the pieces was about 30% less. This may not be the case with all Indian sources though. It has been quite a few years since we last attempted a full market analysis over there.

What about the ""air compressor" route; is that cost effective?
