Cold start using Thermostart
« on: October 29, 2013, 06:55:16 PM »
I've been intrigued by the many and various discussions regarding cold starting aids for Listers. Living in a climate where the temperature range does not generally drop below 10 degC (50 degF), such aids don't really feature on my to-do list.  However, I did "discover" a cold start feature on my Massey Ferguson tractor when I bought an operator's manual, and I thought it might be a useful suggestion for those that do have to use hairdryers, propane torches and the like to get their Listers going in the dead of a North American or European winter.

The Thermostart feature is a type of glow plug or electric element with fuel piped to it via a thermostatic valve fitted into the intake manifold. I've never used it on the MF tractor, and I just turn the key straight past that position on the ignition switch.

I looked on Youtube, and sure enough, someone else has documented a demonstration.

Apparently it was manufactured by CAV but is quite an archaic concept in relation to modern diesel engine design and emissions regulations. Has anyone considered this for their Lister?
