considering buying a lister AC1 4BHP 2100 what is it?
« on: December 20, 2012, 05:32:58 AM »
lister 1938, SN 00516, Model AC1, Rond C, Builid NO 03, Power 4.0 BHP R/Min 2100.

I was thinking on putting a 2KW gen head on it to charge up 24kw of batteries for a system that would run my home which uses around 6KW a day.

Well I found this here spec sheet so that is some more info.
http://www.lister-petter.co.uk/products_browse.php?browseAction=datasheets&productByType=3&seriesId=353

I found the manual also.
http://www.winget.co.uk/document/LISTER%20PETTER%20AC-AD%20OPERATORS%20MANUAL.pdf

Also any one know what one of these AC1 4BHP 2100rpm are worth with the starter option attached?

I am wondering what kind of fuel per hour this would burn? the lister 6/1 on full usings 0.4Lph which is very low. Do they do as good as a Lister 6/1 CS?

Bob.

The Petter AC1 is rated 1500 to 3600 rpm - 2.1 to 4.8kW and certainly not for the same type of service the old CS 6/1 (650 rpm) is engineered for. The AC is light and portable and modern compared to the CS. Trying to compare a Mack truck to a Suzuki? Nothing against the AC, but we would only expect a tiny fraction of the life expectancy we have for the the old Lister slow-speed thumpers!

AC1 Fuel Consumption per L/P
Fuel consumption at maximum torque speed (5% tol.) and 100% load
g/kWh 268 265
lb/hph 0.44

I don't think I understand the above numbers. How many L/hr does the 2100rpm 4HP AC1 use?

I will have to look up the performance curve to find maximum torque speed... most likely around 80% of max speed I would guess.  Maybe around 3000 rpm? Then do the math for converting either horsepower hours or kilowatt hours, and convert the resulting (either grams or pounds) into Liters. Lister always gives "specific fuel consumption" as the rating methodology - in this manner. Then you would have to scale back the figures for your 2100 rpm target figure.

I will try to remember to get out that reference manual, unless someone else has the figures handy and beats me to it. In a nutshell, I think the AC is going to burn slightly more fuel for the same output because it is a much smaller displacement engine achieving its power via much higher rotational speed. In general, the larger the displacement, the better specific fuel consumption can be achieved.

The AC1 has a total mass around 100lbs, the CS is about 700lbs or higher if using heavy flywheels. We all know which unit makes more sense for stationary power! Large mass, low-speed!

the model I am looking at has 4HP at 2100rpm. The tag on the engine says BHP 4, RPM 2100.

what is the calculation that I need to do? and how are these numbers used?

g/kWh 268 265
lb/hph 0.44

Short answer... AC1 at 100% load and 2100rpm converted to Litres per hour = 0.9

If your other figures are correct... this would tranlsate to more than double the fuel consumption... Wow!

thank you very much!

Given those numbers could you post the mathematical equation that you used to come up with 0.9LPH @ 100% load

fuel consumption l/h=(g/kWh x kW) divided by 839

POWER 1kW = 1.341 bhp or 3412 BTU/hr
FUEL (diesel) 18,400 Btu/lb
specific gravity of fuel is assumed 0.84

AC1 specification at 2100 rpm full load is 4.0 bhp and 3.0kW

0.25 gallon per hour

There comes some complexity from various ways of expressing the same thing... you must convert to the units you want to use.
1 Litre = 2.1134 US pint
1 UK Gallon = 1.2009 US Gallon

Metric to US measurements - back and forth, a whole range of different possible formulae to get to your end result.  8)
