Witte CD-14 in Az
« on: October 13, 2012, 04:45:57 AM »
I gave this a new thread because I wanted some input from Witte knowledgeable people.

I contacted the CL poster about this engine that Generator - $2500 after "slowspeed" posted it here in the Witte LD vertical in Tucsun, AZ thread.  The ad says "Runs good, Start with gas and switch over to Diesel."  I thought the seller meant LPG or NatGas but when I asked him he wrote, "Regular gas then switches over to diesel.".  They also said it was a model CD-14.

I've never read of Witte diesel having gasoline startup, anyone know more about these?

Gasoline must be atomized by a carburetor or fuel injector, then ignited with a spark.  Diesel is atomized by a high-pressure pump & injector, then ignited through compression.

Diesel and gasoline are two fuels with intentionally different design characteristics.  Diesel is measured with the Cetane index and gasoline with the Octane index. If a fuel performs well on one index, it usually performs very badly on the other.  A good diesel fuel will be easy to ignite and will have a short ignition delay period because you want the fuel to ignite almost instantaneously. A good gasoline will be defined just the opposite: the more compression the fuel can withstand before detonating, the better it is (hence, difficult to burn).

There may be some way by which this reported operation could work, but what would be the motivation to do this?

I also noted some references to a White diesel in that thread and that is a distinctly different thing from Witte. Not the same company nor designs.
Is there some confusion in this regard?

International Harvester made a crawler, I think it was a TD40 and a straight 8 that started on petrol and then changed over to diesel once running and warm, I have actually seen one in the flesh so its not a myth, the reason for petrol starting was that 1930s diesels were difficult to start in cold weather and petrol starting overcame this.

They did make some carburetor engines with spark ignition that could be started on gasoline and then run on heavier fuel such as kerosene or diesel (or drip gas).  They typically had lower compression ratios to prevent knocking, and you had to start on gasoline to warm the engine up before it would burn the heavier fuel.

I think the engine in the CL add is a "real" diesel - I stared at the tiny little picture for a while and I think that's an injection pump just above the flywheel on the block.  It appears to have a high pressure line connected to an injector mounted at an angle on the side of the head.  Kinda hard to see, it might be wishful thinking on my part.  Maybe it's a little low on compression and he uses some gasoline in the intake as starting fluid - sounds dangerous to me!

Some engines also had priming cups on the cylinder where you could add a little fuel to help with starting.  I wouldn't add gasoline on a diesel engine, though.

The seller e-mailed me larger photos than was in the CL ad.  It is definitely a horizontal Witte.

Here is a link to the pics.

Yep, I know about about the Farmall 400 Diesel

I'm enthusiastic novice.  Here are a couple of photos of my BD and then a CD that I long for here on the island.  Neither have tasted direct gasoline in their lives nor do they have equipment that would facilitate that process.  Mine is the one with the extraordinary fuel tank.  OH, mines clicks in at 900 to generate 60 hertz and the larger CD runs at 750 (if memory serves my here but slower for sure) and is rated at 12 HP.

It looks like a 45 MPH trailer, but short of having broken welds and cracked tires you are probably "ok".

I thought about it for a few minutes, 200 miles to St Johns is no further than the 200 miles I would have travelled to the Witte's I passed on in New Mexico.  But I'm still passing 'cause I really need a tractor.

good luck

I'm sorry but I'm just not buying it especially with the enclosed push rods.  If you can get the true model and serial number to David Johnson (wittemania@cox.net) he can tell you the year of manufacture.  He'd also know about the gasoline start concept.
