Petteroid runaways, what exactly happens?
« on: April 23, 2012, 04:22:01 PM »
I have a shot at a couple N.O.S Petteroids. Read about everything I could find on the governor problems and never did see where it was posted just what breaks or wears out that causes the run away problems with them? Seems that they are a reasonable engine outside of this?

only certain one have that problem.if it has a pre-set rpm..some will run away. if it has a throttle,it is easy to control and runs very good.....they got that reputation from a batch that was sold on the internet about 8 years ago.boy could they reach a high rpm real quick..even after the problem was discovered, they kept selling them.I have had both and still have one with the adjustable throttle and it is a very nice running engine..sid

I just realized I did not explain what caused the petters to run away... of course your problem my be different so this is what we found on the run aways..first they were terrible made.almost assembled from what ever they had at the time.nothing fit very well so the govenor did not work very well. the governor arm was suppose to move back and forth and push the fuel rail on the injector pump to maintain a set rpm..it would jam because the arm was crooked and out of alignment.rebending and aligning the governor arm helped but the sure fix was to junk it or if you were brave enough to run it.attach a 40 foot rope to the fuel rail and governor arm.your problem may be different and I know some one will have a different view of the problem... you are welcome to borrow my 40 foot rope.you have never lived until you have one run away while you are standing next to it..sid

Thanks Sid,
I just became the owner of two NOS Petteroids assembled by GG Automotive Gears. I think one is what is known as a "mini?" both are 1500 RPM ome is 6.5HP the other is around 4HP.

Are you going to Portland Swap?
