Somebody Stop Me!
« on: March 22, 2012, 01:40:38 PM »
A Z4 Bamfords showed up last week.  Identical to Butch's engine.  These are a fairly scarce unit, at least here in the states.

It was stuck, but now free.  Injector pump frozen, now in process of being repaired.  No pictures yet but will post something soon.

See the trouble you have caused Butch?  Next you will probably be delivering another Blackstone engine here....or sending that big 6 cyl Blackstone this way!

OK, as the first part of your therapy you need to box that thing up and ship it to Texas.   ;D  ;D  ;D

We'll discuss the second step in the process once the first step is completed.

PM me for full address.

Sir YES SIR!

Or do you want to wait until it is fixed up and running?

Send in NOW!  If you wait until it's running, it will only increase the addiction!  Don't make this hard on yourself!

The engine is partly disassembled.  There was a coolant leak into the oil  and now I see why.  The lower sleeve seals were simply a very heavy treatment of RTV.  No o-rings were installed as done origionally.  The cylinder is now honed and cleaned, ready to go back in when new O rings arrive.  I am working on a new set of rings and the connecting rod bearing will be replaced whenever I can find one.  There is play in the wrist pin and that will all be repaired.  This will be a good engine.

Glad to hear you didn't run into any road blockers Bob.  You will love the beat of that Z4 best sleeping pill ever devised by man. Just pull up a lawn chair and in 10 minutes BINGO!

Making progress.  New wrist pin and bushing in the rod.  First time that I have ever seen wear on the hardened wrist pin..  Rings coming and I'm working on the rod bearings.  New O rings for the sleeve and it is going back in.

Little by little.

I needed a new connecting rod bearing.  Cannot find one through my usual sources and getting impatient on non returned email inquiries.

Order a alloy 932 bronze tube from McMaster.
Carefully saw it in precisely half on the milling machine with a slitting saw.
Super glue it together.
Turn the OD

Bore the ID to fit and test

Finish up with oil grooves, oil wedges, holes, and the lock tabs.

It took most of the day today.

Bob

I should add;

After turning the OD of the bearing, the halves were assembled in the rod.  There is .003 compression on the cap.  The rod cap bolts are torqued and then the ID is bored to size on the mill.  Then it was a matter of completing the oil grooves and holes.

That sure is impressive, Bob. I had no idea that the glue and turn method sometimes used in fancy woodturning  could be done in metal.  Please tell me more about the oil groove and hole.  How is this end oiled in operation?
