Finding the year of a Lister
« on: October 07, 2011, 10:52:25 PM »
Hi All,

I finally found an LD1 and joined the ragtag fugitive gang of Lister owners !  ;D

Can anyone help me determine the year that my engine was made?
Serial number is: 643LR118

thanks,

breaks down to engine number 643 of year produced, LR = model, 1=number of cylinders, then 18 plus 1950 = 1968 production year.

Good thing... LR is brother to SR and more parts seem to be available than the older LD.

where do you get the1950 from? is that the same for all models as my cs 8/1 is 3928121
so does that mean 392 production run, model 8 ,1 cyl ,then 21 plus 1950 =1971 is that correct or am i missing somethin

They have used differing date coding for different year ranges...
David Edgington's book goes into some detail on this topic.
See this Lister published chart for pre-1951 production:

There is more involved in answering your question, but for right now here is the Lister published dating methodology for 1952 to 1970...

The sources I have indicate the later identification method shown here was first used in 1982.

I would think your breakdown from engine number is therefore correct, using the previous method used from 1952 - 1981 and shown below, where the last one or two digits when added to 1950 give the year of manufacture.

As production finished in 1987, it can't have been built in 1989 as suggested by dating info in the Stationary Engine links .
