« on: August 14, 2011, 11:59:38 AM »

i am picking up a SR3. Can anyone kind enough to tell me the dead weight and the mounting dimension for my frame fabrication. just need prep for her arrival.

i have a 3 inch Southern Cross pump and thinking of hooking it up to go fishing in a large pond

Dry weight on your SR3 is 475 lbs. or 214 Kg.

Engine mounting dimension for footprint on engine block only - 10 3/4" X 17" at bolt centers.

Actual crating clearance dimension is 32 1/8" X 22 1/4".

got the fair lady home today. thanks to dieselgman info, it was easy to court the petite lady onto the pickup at 200 plus kg.

the name plate seems messed up. how could it be a 1993 production unit?

the 15inch pulley has a story to tell. the owner commission some guy to built a genset for his home. i was told on first smoke, it smokes all the appliances in the house which doesnt surprise me judging by the size of the drive pulley.

it was then stored in a fertilizer warehouse for god know how many years until now.

after priming, i crank it and only cylinder 2 is firing. 1 & 3  on silent key. i re prime it many times without luck. this upset the old man and he wet a rag with gasoline and put it on the inlet manifold. on my first crank, cylinder 2 is much healthy and continue cranking put the other 2 to life.

cylinder 1 is leaking oil badly. other than this, it has healthy compression which just need a simple top overhaul to put back her shinning beauty.

1 thing about this 3 cylinders unit is it is dead balance. during my trial firing with her sitting on a frame unbolted, she did not move an inch.

overall impression is i like this lady very much.

Your machine is an SL3 (not SR) and probably about 1962 vintage... (best-guess because it appears the serial number might have been modified). Best of luck with bringing her back to life!

Being an SL3 engine, I hope for your sake that the pistons and cylinder bores are in good condition, as oversize pistons for the SL range are now becoming very tricky to source (not even the Indians make these parts), due to the SL range not being that numerous.

This being due to these engines being an uprated version of the LD range (3" bore verses 3.3/16" bore), and being a stopgap measure until the more powerful SR range was introduced.

There are other parts unique to this engine, these being: Con rod (increased small end diameter), different injector, and injector aluminium finned sleeve.

We do stock pistons and cylinders for this model...

Many of the wear parts are getting difficult to source though.

Dear Listard-JP2 and Dieselgman.

thanks for the valuable info on the SL3 which i myself is of little knowledge.

so with the spares getting hard to come by, i will only use it on standby basis. her first and only role will be driving a 3 inch centrifugal pump.

since my dad and myself have no knowledge of fishing, we thought it would be more fun and easier to drain the pond in order to net the few "bamboo fish" that we rear in the farm as it had proven to be too illusive by other means.

one more unique fact is this unit was actually assembled by the once famed British Engineering company in Malaysia; Harrison Engineering Ltd has a CKD assembly in Malaysia back in the 60s

some of the later 6/1, 8/1 and 16/2 that i had seen also come with the below name plate batch;

sorry for the blur print. it reads Harrison Engineering Ltd, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Penang and Ipoh.

Kuala Lumpur being the capital of Malaysia is where the assembly plant is situated. Singapore is the trading hub for export, some 350KM away from Kuala Lumpur. Penang is our northern most city serving all the smaller agricultural town up north while Ipoh is the land of tin mines in the hey days. i can imagine every mine has a few unit of Lister then.

regards,
