Looking for .040 oversize piston
« on: April 22, 2011, 04:49:32 PM »
I have been stalled on my VA project because I thought the engine was mechanically louder than it should be.  I finally pulled the piston and discovered way too much piston to cylinder clearance.  It will take a .040 oversize to get things back to size.  Central Marine only had stock size.  This is a VA so it has an air cooled cylinder.  Sleeving could be a possibility if all else fails.

Any one have a .040 o/s piston and ring set on the shelf?

I will be checking on old stocks for you Bob, also on availability of replacement cylinder to bring your engine back standard.

Thanks.  I know that I can find a solution.  Might be re-sleving, or a fresh piston.  One way or another.....   Patience.

If you find that you are struggling to find a +0.040" piston, then send me a PM, as I have a contact in the UK who has some. They are Indian in origin, but are good quality, as I have used some of these pistons myself in a Lister CS16-2 with no issues to date.

Or, better yet, a standard size replacement cylinder. Standard pistons and rings are relatively easy to supply!

I would think that VA cylinders are even more scarce than CS oversize pistons.  I did find one, .050 oversize, which is OK.  Also Devang Rathod of - dev_precision_engineers in India can get them for me.  I am working on putting together an order with James Helmuth for him to restock so we can save on shipping.

Yes, there are literally hundreds of suppliers in India who will offer this product... the pistons are not of concern except for quality of metallurgy and manufacture. If you have a supplier for the cylinder castings, we would also have an interest in stocking some of these. We bring a container over from India every 3 months. It would be easy and relatively inexpensive to accomodate the VA components.
