Diesel Fuel Additive Study

I ran across this on a truck site and though it may be of interest.
In the US we have ULSD (ultra low sulfur diesel) thanks to the EPA. With this increased wear on fuel systems has been reported.
This comnpares many of the more common additives as to effectiveness. It is an easy read.
Thought it was cool and would pass it on.

  All around best anti-wear additive is a dose of soy bio-diesel.


These results are listed in the order of performance in the HFRR test. The baseline fuel
used in every test started at an HFRR score of 636. The score shown is the tested HFRR
score of the baseline fuel/additive blend.
Also included is the wear scar improvement provided by the additive as well as other
claimed benefits of the additive. Each additive is also categorized as a Multi-purpose
additive, Multi-purpose + anti-gel, Lubricity only, non-conventional, or as an additive
capable of treating both gasoline and diesel fuel.
As a convenience to the reader there is also information on price per treated tank of diesel
fuel (using a 26 gallon tank), and dosage per 26 gallon tank provided as “ounces of
additive per 26 gallon tank”.

CONCLUSIONS:

Products 1 through 4 were able to improve the unadditized fuel to an HFRR score of 460
or better. This meets the most strict requirements requested by the Engine Manufacturers
Association.
Products 1 through 9 were able to improve the unadditized fuel to an HFRR score of 520
or better, meeting the U.S. diesel fuel requirements for maximum wear scar in a
commercially available diesel fuel.
Products 16 through 19 were found to cause the fuel/additive blend to perform worse than
the baseline fuel. The cause for this is speculative. This is not unprecedented in HFRR
testing and can be caused by alcohol or other components in the additives. Further
investigation into the possibilities behind these poor results will investigated.
Any additive testing within +/- 20 microns of the baseline fuel could be considered to have
no significant change. The repeatability of this test allows for a +/- 20 micron variability to
be considered insignificant.

I was surprised bio was the best and as good as it is. I make bio, so good for me. I was also surprised to see some BIG NAME companies stuff does not do jack stuff.
I had not heard of the Opti-Lube XPD before. I will be checking.

Wags,

Not to be picky but I think it would be helpful if you edited the original post and changed the title spelling to Additive.

It will help folks in the future when searching for fuel additive using the correct spelling.  Otherwise this thread won't be found and it contains lots of great info!

Back in 2006, I was using Jet A in my lister. Jet A has very low lubricity and I was concerned about wear. I contacted Stanadyne and they sent me 3 small plastic sample containers. I spoke with the engineer there and we formulated a plan.

The first sample was clean Jet A.
The second sample was Jet A with Stanadyne lubricity formula at the proper ratio.
The Third sample was Jet A with Stanadyne and Penzoil semi synthetic, outboard TCW-III, 2 stroke oil at 100 to 1.

I can't remember the exact HFRR results. However, it was clear that the mix of 2 stroke oil and Stanadyne lubricity formula reduced the HFRR results from the 600's to the low 200's.

I still use this mix today.
