I have a governor on a GM90 which hunts back and forth regardless of the speed adjustment on the threaded rod. Conditions: - First smoke - No cooling system yet - No load (of course) - Regular diesel Fuel - Gov. linkage has been checked and seems to be free of any drag http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4FSxzbg9sJoAnyone have any ideas on how to solve this ? Thanks, veggiefuel

If it's not the linkage it must be the governor itself... must be sticking?

I had to change the spring and linkage set up to what utter power recomended for better governor response, but mine was not wandering i would try cleaning the injector tip and remove all linkage outside the engin and inspect for any burs or some parts that don't move freely --look at the yoke close to the pump above the adjustment. the little pin moves up and down and also has forces on the side . Needs to be removed and a close inspection ,after be sure to lube it good George did alot of research on this . also check all fuel lines and filter for blockage, check high psi line for very small leaks hope this helps

Wholesale painting is often a problem in the linkage area. I always clean the paint off the movement surfaces. I often find the yoke is stuck together with the stuff. Wondering sounds more like injector tip or fuel filter, as already said.

Also make sure ALL the air is out of the system.

It almost looks like the speed is set too slow, and the governor can't keep a steady pace. If there is any way for you to check the speed, I'd look into that. The governor is shutting off fuel at a very low throttle position.

Thanks everyone. bschwartz, your point has merit. I adjusted the speed up to 900 rpm (these engines can run between 750 and 900 with the correct flywheels) and the engine smoothed out. Seems the engine may have a 900 rpm governor spring even though I ordered a 750. cheers, veggiefuel

The 'as supplied' springs are not any good. Too short. I quit diddling around with mine and followed the advise Toydiesel01 gave you. Check George of http://www.utterpower.com/problems.htm, and the governor problem: http://www.utterpower.com/problems.htm Repositioning the spring end bracket and finding other springs, which you get to test is real "Do It Yerselfer" stuff!! Mine runs great now. But my first set of 'new' springs had the engine surging fast then slow, smoking big black gouts as it came up to speed, then closing the rack to coast down to a lower RPM and begin belching again. A little spring readjustment, maybe add or subtract a spring, then try again until you get it right.
