Lister engines in storage
« on: September 09, 2009, 12:52:05 AM »
Hi All
I have several Listers in Storage, the longest about 18 months and got to thinking the pumps and injectors may be gumming up, I inquired about storage/calabration fluid and the cost was about $250 for 20 Lts which is out of my price range for 3 or 4 engines, anybody use some other fluid or say a home made mixture

Dont worry, they can store for ages, without problems.

My old Nuffield tractor is only started every three or four years and so far there has been no problems.

Pumps & injectors will be ok as the diesel will be ok for quite long periods. Bores , rings & valves are the thing to be concerned about. Ideally the oil should be drained before storage and replaced with storage oil , engine turned over to circulate then thats it. Failing that squirt some engine oil down the  the intake and turn over to coat the bore and rings. Then spray some preservative oil down the intake and if poss down the exhaust port after removing the manifold. Many don't bother with anything and seem to get away with it but it depends on storage conditions. Condensation is the enemy , if the storage conditions cause condensation then bores will rust and valves will stick.

Oh , forgot to mention , on single cylinder engines . leave the piston at TDC on the compression stroke , even if you haven't done any of the above !

Some people plug up the intake and exhaust and put a desiccant inside.  Seems like it might help.

Barry you really should sell them cheap fast before they're ruined!
I'll help you out!

There use to be a product that was in a spray can that would fill cavities with foam for long storage of pumps. Might look in that direction.

Wow someone else has a Nuffield Tractor!!!!

I drove a Nuffield here in Australia as a teenager on my aunt's farm during my school holidays. Fantastic!!!!

This was really old. It was orange with "BMC Diesel" on the front grill.
Had a driving pulley on the side, also had the bucket accessory at the front. Pull the cord to tip 'er out!! ;)

Electric and crank start.
It only had 4 or 5 forward speed box. A very early diesel unit, just after the days of kerosene IIRC.

Great memories!!
