S-O-M plant dating.
« on: July 07, 2009, 07:19:15 AM »
Hi
Yesterday i got myself a genuine 6/1  2.5 KW startomatic. Bourght it off eBay uk. Not quite as good as the description, but still rebuildable.
Alternator top box is there including a mouse nest :-)  But i need the control box- anyone got a spare one?`

In order to rebuild it i need a manual and a description how it works, if possible. Is it possible to find out when it was build, and for whom?

Spec plate on baseplate says:  Plant no. 9011 SOMAC  Engine CS 96667  Generator  43278K  2.5 KW
               on engine:            CS 9666    7     5/1/35
               on generator:       18060N.

Cheers
Torsten

I have a copy of the manual , will email it to you. The control box will be difficult to find I think ! Keep looking on ebay is your best plan. There are different types to suit different alternators though and they did change through the years so you will need to find a compatible unit !

This is a sure sign that one needs to get out more if they actually consider their relationship with their SOM plant as "dating".  ;)

Yup, 1951 started with 85082 and they were making about 12 - 15,000 per year.

Oiler

There was a topic in the generator section called  Lister 2.5K Generator Control which gives the information that you need to get your generator running without the second startomatic box.

Re: S-O-M plant dating and exploded diagrams....

Hi all.
I was lucky enough to get an 8/1 startomatic yesterday, wondering if anyone can help "date" the plant please?
Details I have are:
Plant number:22569SOMAC.
Engine number: 231 817.
Size: 4.5kw.
Generator No: 16315/45.

Would love to know how old she is, and also, particularly interested in getting hold of an operators manual for it.
It did come with an original "instruction book and parts list" (Book 547/158), but I gather the "operator's manual" is different again to that.
Anything that shows exploded diagrams of this alternator would be really good to have too.

Thanks in advance for any help anyone can offer.

Cheers, Ben, Lilydale, Australia.

Hi Ben,
1957. One of the first 8/1 units to be built. The generator is a ‘fat boy’ Mawdsley generator, also made in Dursley. I’ve got the schematic for this unit. If you PM me your email I’ll send them over.
