What size mig welder is compatable w/ 6/1 ST5?
« on: April 15, 2006, 04:25:51 PM »
In a year I will be off grid. Power lines will be 34 miles away. I am looking to buy a new Mig Welder and need to figure what is the biggest amperage welder I can push with a 6/1-ST5 or 10/1-ST5. Thanks JP

140 amp welder (toy like mine with a 50% duty cycle) pulls about 3 Kw.

Original Lister CS 6/1 Start-o-matic 2.5 Kw (radiator conversion)
3Kw 130 VDC Dynamo to be added. (compressor + hyd pump)
Original Lister D, megasquirt multifuel project, compressor and truck alternator.
Current status - project / standby, Fuel, good old pump diesel.

go with the 10/1 and a 220 volt 160amp like one of the hobarts or millers

and step up to gas shield, i don't think you will  be happy with flux cored

co2 welds a bit hotter than straight argon, and mixed gasses also can help pick up the heat
(up to 25% helium in an argon gas base really picks up the heat, but can be tricky to master)

I've run my cheapo Century MIG with my 6/1 and it ran great. Well just as good as utility power any way. I'm using .030 flux core wire on the high (don't know what that amperage is). I used the same MIG welder to build my base too. On high I think it only has about a 10% duty cycle though so it takes patience.

Thanks for the info. Miller has a 180 that will probably will work. I have a costco century 130 that I need to replace.  JP
