1934 JP2 Valve Rocker Shaft
« on: April 03, 2009, 05:07:10 PM »
I've only just discovered this site so this is my first posting.
For our sins we have a '34 JP2 in a boat on the River Soar in the UK.
It has just disgraced itself by blowing a head gasket after 15 years of quite hard usage so no complaints there, but while I'd gotten it stripped down I discovered the rocker shafts were very worn.
The JP2/CS18/2 from the pre war period, unlike the later JK/JS,did not have a positive oil feed to the rockers.
The problem is that this item is no longer available.
So the question is,Does anyone know what the composition/heat treatment is for a Lister rocker shaft so that I can get a couple made up.
The other alternative might be to utilise a CS shaft and re-bush the rockers,Does anyone happen to know the diameter and length of one of these as I don't happen to have one about at the moment.

Blimey , quite a question !! Welcome & good to have you with us by the way !!

You may well get a suggestion for the material and heat treatment , nothing surprises me on here !!  What are the rockers themselves like for wear ?

How hard have you tried looking for this part?

Have you contacted Marine Engine Services, http://www.marineengine.co.uk tell Peter or Chris that Nobby sent you.
or
Peter Forbes AKA Listerdiesel, http://www.oldengine.org/members/diesel/index.htm

good places to start and very good knowledgeable people to deal with.  I good give you more contacts but it is small network and they all will somewhat just call each other anyways.  No point creating crossed wires so to speak

Cheers

Thank you all very much.
Pete T at Uxbridge assures me that I haven't got a cat in hell's chance of getting new ones.
I've not measured them properly but it feels to be about 0.010" and I simply don't know how deep the case hardening is,if it is indeed case hardened.
Although I don't have a CS I do have an LD2 so I'll measure that rocker shaft in the morning.

You might try Stationary Engine Parts, I believe they are in the U.K. but it does not say on thier web site. what the site does say is that they have recently aquired "vast stocks of genuine lister parts" including parts for the JP series of engines.
   Good luck, Scott R.

There are plenty of steels available now that will do the job without heat treatment, and I think it is a pretty plain shaft by memory, and could be replicated by a good machinist.

The other option is to turn the shaft down to clear the wear and rebush the rockers with undersized bronze bushes, a course that I would look at if it was my own engine. The rest of the shaft outside the rocker area is doing nothing.

Tim Leech at Dutton Dry Dock is a good guy for this sort of thing, he isn't cheap but does a good job and can be recommended. You can find Tim on the model engineering Usenet newsgroup ( uk.rec.models.enginering ) or on Google.

Thanks for that everybody.
I knew that Stationary Engine Parts had acquired some NOS but I've not contacted them yet.
I will probably end up having some made by calling in a few favours!!

John there is another option that I have used in the past with some success.
If you have a hard chrome facility with grinding machines in your area it is a very good repair.
You would take the shaft in and have them grind down about .020" in the worn area and then hard chrome slightly oversize.
Then it would be reground to spec.
I've used this before on hard or soft steel and the results are very good. As a bonus the chrome retains the oil well and lasts a long time.
This process was used in a grinding shop I used to work at that rebuilt pnematic hard rock drilling cases and internal components.
I used it for my own parts on a Ford 460 timing case crank bushing for the oil seal and its been working well ever since 1997 and not a drop spilled yet.
