CS startomatic first service in years - whats needed?
« on: March 31, 2009, 11:22:04 PM »
Been asked to get a 1950s CS going again - last used 5? years ago. Theres no particular reason why it shouldnt go - fuel, compression etc.

the client is in the middle of nowhere - what should I take with me?

You don't need that many spanners to take the whole thing apart.  Who knows what spares might be needed.

Last used does not mean last serviced.  That could have been twenty years before that. :)

Change the oil and fuel filter. Be prepared to bleed the fuel system. Fill the rocker shaft greaser and purge out the old grease.  I would change the V belts that drive the alternator. Check the condition of the alternator brushes and commutator. Before starting remove the crancase door and flood the big end and mains with oil from a pump oil can. Operate the hand lever on the oil pump to make sure oil is reaching the mains. Fill the recess in the head around the valves with oil. There is a little screw near the tappets marked 'oil' , remove that and pour in about a qtr pint of oil. Fill the pushrod and tappet tops with oil. I think thats about it !!

I suggest that you check the operation of the fuel pump, including that the rack moves properly, and check and lubricate the external governor and stop/start linkage. I have a SOM set which hasn't run for a good five years, and probably rather more, and the injection pump was stuck tight with fuel deposits (see earlier post about freeing it). The other problem I envisage, but time will tell whether or not it really will be a problem, is mucky contacts etc on the relays in the two control boxes.

Good points there somian. Also , I forgot the alternator bearings have greasers , visible when the brush gear inspection covers are removed , give them a turn or 2 , better still , remove the covers , fill with new grease and give them a turn.

Oh , cooling system !!  Could be rad or tank cooled ?  Either way , unless the engine was drained down when it was last used there could be frost damage , so check carefully. Would be worth flushing the engine water ways. Check the water hoses. If rad cooled fill with new anti-freeze solution , change the fan belt and service the greasers on the fan shaft or oil the bearings if the later type are fitted.

Push down on each valve stem to make sure they are free before you turn the flywheels to eliminate breaking a rocker arm. Take an air compressor and solvent should you find the oil lines need sludgy oil cleaned out of them.Take feeler guages to set valves.

Don't forget the 2 screw heads right above the main bearings on the top of the housing (inboard of both flywheels) as you will be able to put oil right to the crankshaft helping the lubing there.

Well , at least take some photo's. It's good to see these things in a working application.
