frame rigitity+jaw couplings
« on: February 22, 2009, 10:58:35 PM »
hello all, just finished coupling hr2 w/st10 gen. frame is 5x5 h beams spaced 24 inches on centre. eng+gen sit on 3x3x1/2 welded to beam webs. all is fine on cast iron lay-out table . pick up unit and set it down on imperfect surface and coupler sounds like a dog working a rubber chew toy. shaft centres 14 inchs above frame centres. ok for stationary bolt down . a failure for portible use. any ideas? aloris

H and I beams are rigid in bending but about worthless on their own in twist

if you can, you might consider welding in round section crossmembers between the two beams
this will dramatically stiffen the beams from twisting.

you wanna make sure everything is plumb and level before you weld them in, because afterwards the beams will not
twist any appreciable amount (which is what you are after anyway)

torque tube, torque box construction is very rigid and will keep thing from twisting under load
it is this twisting too and froe that makes the drive coupler play hell with its spider element

if you go the route of round crossmembers, remember to make them as large in diameter as you can

after installation the tubes will maintain the beams from twisting, because to do so would require the round crossmembers
would also have to twist, which they will not to any appreciable degree if they are reasonably large in diameter.

Box section would have been better to make the frame from.

can you put the pipes in as crossmembers between the I beams at the front and rear?

if so you will accomplish the same thing, and it might look better? fit nicer? easier to fit and weld?

No 2 floors are the same for a portable. Mine always sets good with 3 legs. No rock on uneven ground and it doesn't twist the frame. Worth a try?!

Aloris--  (Are you a tool holder?)

I'm with Mobile Bob as to the solution of the twisting problem.  You have plenty or room to install four, four inch steel pipes between the I-Beam webs.  Cut through one web, run the pipe through, butt weld the blind side and fillet weld the pierced side.

The alternative is to X web the outsides of the I-Beam like bridges and trestles are done to make the members resist twisting.  The pipe seems the much easier choice.

Very nice job!!

Aloris is no longer a member (hence: guest under his name). I presume that wherever the photo used to be hosted, it isn't any more. Hence, the blankness...
