Intro & starting point
« on: January 08, 2009, 01:27:31 AM »
Hi folks,

I am new to the forum, so firstly howdy  ;D.  I have always had a soft spot for lister diesels having grown up with them pumping the water and providing the electricity.  I am reasonably mechanically minded and need a backup source of power where I live, so I decided to get into the old engine pastime.  Besides, my ancient bolens ridemaster, my struck mini dozer and my ford 1100 tractor need company, right ?.

It turns out that is easier said than done, original engines go for a premium here.  Recently someone posted an ad for two non working engines, now really I am only interested in the single cylinder what I assume to be a CD, but I was wondering whether folks thought there was any value in this: http://www.usedvictoria.com/classified-ad/7881911

Thanks for taking the time and please feel free to offer any opinions, you can guarantee that you know more about this topic than I do  ::)

Oh yeah, there is also another CD for sale, but too much for my pocket if anyone is interested.  Just search for lister.

Cheers
Bruce

It doesn't look like a CD to me.  It looks like a single version of the twin in the other pic.  Looks like a bargin regardless.

Bruce! That CD is a bargain for $600!  If you don't want it I'd bet Jens would snatch it up!

The CD isn't aircooled, you have to search for it.

Hey Jens, yeah I am in the highlands but I don't own a Lister yet, so I may have to be the club mascot or something for a while.  Where are you located ?.

Stan, I am gonna bring up the subject of the Lister with SWMBO but given that its been less than six months since I begged, pleaded, bargained and
generally whined my way to buying a little 13hp ford diesel tractor with a FEL, I might not get much more than pursed lips.

Mean, you are right, that seems to be an SR1 and would probably be a bit light for my purpose.  I want to run 5kw min.

OK, I pretended the pursed lips was a smile of encouragement and put in an offer.  We will see what happens ...  ;D

Hey, thanks Tom.  The ridemaster I have is about the funkiest looking object out there.  A design that should never have made it past the drawing board imo.  It is still unrestored, but in fantastic shape for a 60 year old piece of machinery.  I believe it ran up until 10 years ago when it developed a crack in the carb.  I still even have the original pull start cord.  Here is a pic of this strange object.  This one is restored, hopefully mine will look like that one day. http://www.starchak.ca/Bolens/images/finished2.jpg

Sorry, back on topic now, still have not had a response to my offer  :-\

The Husky 800 was one of the best looking Bolens. With the ag tires on it, it looks like a mini ford 8n. Mine is still used regularly.

I managed to contact the seller, and the engine is a non runner, so it may not be an option.  Apparently the small babbitt is beaten to submission, and the listard liner is worn to the point of needing re-chroming (if available) or replacement of sorts.

Are these significant issues with these engines ?.  I know that with my other diesel engines I would be pretty hesitant to pay money for anything that required me to pull the heads.

Not sure what you are referring to as the "small babbitt" but if it's the bushing for the small end of the connecting rod, it could be available as a purchased item, maybe someone on the forum would know about a CD small end bush.

As for the listard liner, mine is worn also but I'm going to run it as is and see what transpires.  Evidently they will run acceptably well with quite a bit of wear, if you replace the rings and the compression is acceptable.  Again, not sure of CD's but you might phone a machine shop with the dimensions of the cylinder and ask about the price to rebuild it with chrome or just bore it out and replace the rings with chrome ones.  You want to use different materials on the rings and cylinder.  If one is iron, the other should be chrome.

I would think any used "lister" type engine you buy you will have to take the head off and de-coke or lap the valves or something or other, even just to check things out.  It's not hard, nor does it take much time.  A few minutes actually to disassemble and then a year to reassemble  ;D

Sid, Lol, I hear ya.  Once I get her running any use will be limited to flat and level at agricultural shows.

Stan, I probably got that wrong after a phone conversation with the owner.  I think it refers to the rod bearing.

This is looking like a moot point.  My heart is with the CD but after talking to the owner of the SR2 and SR1, my head says I should go with them.  I need this for practical use, and both for $250 is pretty cheap.  If the seller is being straight with me, and I have no reason to think not, the 13hp sr2 air cooled is a perfect fit for what I want, plus I could recover my money and then some by selling the SR1.  Maybe one day I will pick up a slow speed lister.

So what now, do I get escorted to the door or what  ;)   I notice that there don't seem to be any forums here for the faster engines.
