That generator head has whats called an "exciter" instead of the slip rings on the ST heads but it functions the same was. The winding on the left of the pole pieces for the main rotor acts like a small generator to feed power to the main field. This is how most large alternators are built these days and I wish this was the way large ST heads were built.
This is my prefered brushless design....
