rheostat instalation for voltage tweaking
« on: September 28, 2008, 08:17:06 PM »
For those of you that have added a rheostat for voltage tweaking or perhaps after installing a cap as is my case. What size rheostat have you used? I have a 12kw ST head and according the ST manual at http://www.utterpower.com/ST_manual.pdf they call for a 200w 5ohm rheostat. Is that correct or a typo? That's one honker of a rheostat. I have a few 25w 6 ohm rheostats that I had planned on using then I ran across that.   ???

My ST head came with a large wire wound rheostat on a ceramic ring with a rotary wiper.
It was not well made and I had trouble with open circuits.
I removed it and the voltage is very close to ideal, I forget but only 250V or something.
So you might not need it. Anyway, hook up your system without it and find out what voltage you get.
Then borrow an amp clamp and read your current to the field, and also check the voltage. Then you can figure out the actual watt load on the field circuit. Add a safety factor and buy your rheostat if you still think you need one....I don't.
