Re: Is anyone using a PMG?

I am currently attempting to acquire a machine, possibly a AC induction motor, possibly a real AC synchronous alternator as a starting point into which I propose to install a custom made PM rotating field armature.

Sadly, this unit is probably rather small for your purpose, and not as high voltage as you're looking for, but I still have 2 of these 3-phase permanent magnet servos left.
They make real nice little generators. I've used smaller versions of these on several wind mills in the 300W - 1.2KW range.

The servo shown in this photo is rated at 11.7KW

I've still got a 14KW one left too. Kinda waiting for the right project (maybe hydro) for it...

Steve, I just sent you PM.  Please reply to my email address rcavictim at gmail dot com, not the ListerEngines PM  address.

mobile_b   I'm with you.  There is a lot of good information at this site, but there's also a lot a crud posted in between.  Makes for hard reading sometimes.

SitRep,  Your 30A fuse will limit you to 3600W.  To get the full 4500W from your PMG you would need a 37.5A fuse, (let me know if you find one).  Have you tried to blow your 30A fuse?  What voltage drops do you see when you get above a 3000W level?
Also, I'm still troubled by the RPM of your engine vs PMG.  Do you have 23 1/2" diameter wheels?  Seems like I'm missing something here.

I would think that there should be several manufacutures of 120/220 PMG's to compare with but utterpowers is the only one of this type,  wonder why?

because the pm genhead market is a niche market
and the devopment costs are a formidable barrier to entry.

not many folks are going to put 3-5 years of their life, and 10s of thousands of dollars in development
when they can just order a bunch of ST heads and get a return on their investment in a reasonable length
of time, and call it a day.

anyway that is the way i see it.

As best I can tell with my cheap clamp on ammeter, I am yanking 28 amps out of her max at 110V.
That is when I am cutting 3/8ths.
I wish the kill a watt would work at over 15 amps

I have not tripped that 30 amp breaker yet and I figure that's a good thing.

With out some nitrous injection I don't think the 6/1 will give 4.5 k except in a surge situation.

I tightened the hell out of my belt which explained the pulley diffs.

I just feel pretty darn good about this rig doing what I need it to do and be trouble free.

from your reports it looks like the pm head is well engineered and suited to the 6/1

i guess all George's blood sweat and tears has produced a winner :)

now if only the 6/1's were as reliable out of the crate, then a guy could buy one of each
get the right pulley up front and have a working system straight away.

wouldn't that be a novel concept!

pretty impressive to use the welder and plasma cutter effectively isn't it?

Yes it is.
I have a 20 amp line in my garage and the plasma cutter trips that,  but Forest & Genny just putt right along.
I am stoked.

Just an update, there is zero flicker on incandescent, CFL or halogen bulbs.
