Camshaft Endcap Anyone?
« on: June 25, 2008, 02:37:51 AM »
On some Listeroids it appears that the govener housing has no camshaft endcap.
Here is a pic I found taken by Reno Speedster.......

http://www.imagecoast.com/images/renospeedster/oilfilter.jpg

Notice the exposed cam tip?

Other listeroids have the bushing pushed further inside to allow for the included endcap.

Anyone else noticed this?
Anyone know the reasons behind the choice to include or not include the endcap?

The blind hole is probably more difficult toi machine than the open.
Seems to me the open one has some advantages, you could place and oiled flet over it and always be sure its getting some kind of oil.....

I have both......"end cap" on one is a soft plug type I believe.......still bored thru....no problem either way that I have seen. The open one I can tell the engine is running if it is turning ;D

Thanks for that Xyzer.
What about dirt getting in the open ended type?

A bit worrying since the crankcase is under a vacuum.
It could suck any old dust or dirt right in and start grinding the camshaft away!

Matt,
I don't think you have to worry. It usually is a wet area with oil. I don't believe the negative pressure is enough to pull dirt in. The oil will create its own seal. But you have a point....can't you get a rubber cap and put over the outside?

If you can get some felt in there that you can drip oil on.

I like felt......

Electric motors with bronze bushign use felt oiler and it works very well. A couple of drops ever now and then and it will slowly wick oil into the biushing as needed

Matt,
Some end mills come in a plastic tube with a soft plastic cap. 3/4" might be about right...then cut a nice piece of felt squirt some oil on it and put it in the bottom of the cap...install .....then all your basses are covered.

Doug...Haven't you read the union poster about the brain that thought he was in charge of the body, and the "bumb hole" that just quietly closed up?

Thanks, Geno

I figured you would be.  I'd bet you had that poster up in your office.  I had one but couldn't put it up in my classroom.  ::)
