Difference between 5/1 and 6/1 please?
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:45:25 PM »
Hi
Can anyone tell me the actual difference between 5/1 and 6/1 please?
I know the rpm, but what else? I have had a look at the parts list and all the bits look to be the same part numbers.
Is it a governor setting or...?
The reason is I have an engine with no plate on it, it has a changeover valve so probably not an 8/1.
Help required please.
Thanks

I know 6/1s' are 650 rpm but 5/1s' 600 rpm?
Haven't had it running yet just want to know what the beast is first.
Is it just an rpm thing or something else?
Thanks for the reply

Everything I have ever heard is that if it has a changeover valve and it's single cylinder it's a 5 or 6/1 and they are both identical.  Now, saying that, there are differences in older and newer 5,6/1 machines.  Different injectors, flywheels etc, but the only difference between a 5/1 and a 6/1 is the rpm.

There is no mechanical difference at all between a 5/1 and a 6/1. It is the same engine.

Most were sent out as 5/1 at first. but later on the nameplates were stamped 6/1.

Thanks for the replies guys
No idea why the plate was removed, it certainly wasn't to repaint it ( well not recently) :-\

Are the flywheels spoked or solid looking ? Am I off by saying another difference is the flywheel design ? Am currently too lazy to surf pics to see for myself LOL.

contaucreek,

No, The heavy flywheels, for generating sets for instance, were the solid looking ones.  I would guess that few if any pre 650 RPM machines were equipped with heavy flywheels, but an awful lot of 650 machines had spoked flywheels.

Solid 'electrical flywheels' were fitted to generating set engines only, up until the 8/1 when they were redesigned and fitted on all engines. The VA had SOM flywheels.

Finally got to look athe the flywheels on the beast, and they are solid SOM type, so possibly off a genset. Did they make a 5/1 genset?
If not, question has been answered, thanks ;D

Yes, there was a direct-coupled CS 5/1 genny.

I also noticed today a picture of a 1920's petrol twin Lister with what could almost be classed as SOM flywheels, except that it wasn't a SOM set engine, just a conventional Lister-Bruston generating set unit.

The flywheels had two kidney shaped holes opposite each other in otherwise solid flywheels, and probably an 1-3/4" crank diameter.

Andy, the second Lister I found was a twin, and it's flywheels were identical to my 6/1 "electric" flywheels.  I just saw a pic on this forum of a 12/2 with what appeared to be 6/1 (like) spoked flywheels.  I think there was a wide variation in the style of flywheels used on the 5 or 6/1's and 10 or 12/2's probably due to the same size crankshafts making them all interchangeable with little effort.
