Lister VA
« on: February 17, 2008, 02:31:19 AM »
I visited my Amish friend today.  He asked if I'd come along and help with the install of an electric start on a Lister VA.  This is a 8-1 Lister with air cooling.  This drives an air compressor at an Amish farm.  Note the extra belts and jackshaft that disappears into the barn.  The compressor is on a slide base to release the belt when starting.

Here are a vew pictures I took with the owners permission, being sure that he was out of the picture.

And finally the electric start;

I took a couple of video clips.  I'll post a link to when they get done uploading

Yes, he installed a starter generator unit.  They are used on many garden tractors (Simplicity and others) and this shop stocks them.  They charge at 8A max.  The generator "motors" when starting.

For some reason Photobucket gags every time I upload the video clip.  Sorry.

How did that starter/gen work out? I've salvaged one for when I get too feeble to crank but there was a question as to weather they were up to the task.     Bill

It worked well.  The engine DID have to have the compression release set to get it spinning up.  Then after release it took off.  The battery was set to charge at about 7 amps full charge.

I saw this setup used on a Witte engine running a air compressor also.  It had been in use for years.
