Lister 20/2
« on: December 01, 2007, 04:30:49 AM »
Greetings everyone.  I've been lurking for a while now. Reading and learning. Well, today I purchased a Lister 20/2 2600 RPM air cooled engine.
It has a lever operated clutch, an electric starter and a hand crank. I would appreciate a pointer to a service manual or service information for this
engine.  The guy I purchased it from was going to take it to the scrap yard for scrap.  OH.....did I mention that I purchased this engine for $50.00
US Dollars.   ;D Thanks in advance for any help.

Hmmmm, your first post and we hate you already.   :D

Good find there!  I`m sure someone who knows the higher speed air cooled engines will be able to help you with techical info.  Welcome to the group!

Does the engine run?

;D  Yes it runs. I just uploaded pics to coppermine.  http://listerengine.com/coppermine/displayimage.php?album=lastup&cat=1&pos=0
1st attempt, hope I got it right.  I cleaned the small fuel filter bowl, not the Racor, used a camera tripod, funnel and hose. Added fuel.
Had to tap the solenoid, primed with lever on side of fuel pump and cranked over. Took me about a minuet to figure out that the stop lever
was in the no fuel position. Anyway, cranked and moved compression release and it started. On the picture it looks like smoke, it's just west
Texas dust. Moved other lever and it ran on both cylinders. ;D ;D ;D Now to find a generator.

Lucky sonofa$#@&*.   >:(  There was another fellow on the forum that found a beautiful complete 3 cylinder Lister engine in a dumpster recently.  I can`t really complain.  I have found treasure on occasion myself.

I wonder what your`s was used for with clutch and that big long belt cage?

If you direct couple that to an 1800 RPM gen head you will have a sweet power plant there for sure!

I was told the engine powered a water pump. Understand, this is in the southwestern US desert. I've been thinking of a Delco brushless generator, like the ones that were used on railroad refrigerated cars. I've found several places that have them attached to 2-71 Detroit Diesel engines. 12.5 and 20 KW.
I like the self exciting scheme.  I've got this engine low idle at 408 RPM. Is this too low?? The high idle is adjusted to 1183 RPM. Tomorrow I'll change the engine oil, filter, and blow/wash the dirt from inside the cooling shroud. Fuel I used is about 5 yrs. old.  Left over from the steam cleaner. Should run better with NEW FRESH fuel.
Still Grinnin...... ;D

Trouble with the Delco reefer 2-71 powered gen heads is they are all 1200 RPM, too low for your engine to make much power.  I think you`d be lucky to see 4 kW come out of a 12.5 kW head at that speed.

I wish I could find one of those 1200 RPM heads for my wind turbine!

i am curious
how would you use a 1200 rpm head on a windgenerator?
with a geartrain to speed up to the 1200 or ?

DC

i would not run that engine below its rated speed, at least by much
being an air cooled engine its airflow is dependant on engine speed
and is likely designed to deliver enough air at its rated speed
and may not cool properly at dramatically lower rpm

are the delco 1200rpm heads single brg heads?

I have a nice low loss planetary gearbox with an ~11:1 ratio attached to a 15 HP, 1725 RPM 3-phase electric motor.  Replacing the motor with a 6 pole alternator (1200 RPM for those who don`t know) I can the put a prop on this thing that will spin the gen head full speed with the prop going 109 RPM.  That is about perfect for a 35 foot prop with a TSR (tip speed ratio) in the mid 5`s.

Actually that was the original plan to which I spent a whole summer building parts.  Turns out I`m not well enough to climb a tower anymore so......  Go to Plan-B.

Vertical axis wind turbine.  All the heavy gear, gen head, gearbox, etc. is at ground level.  I`ll need additional gear step-up as the vert turbine will turn slower, but a truck rear differential in 6:1 might do the trick prior to the planetary box and provide the 90 degree right angle from horizontical to vertical shaft I need.

The original plan plan, 1.0, was a 20/2 Lister with a 15KW ST.  Since this 2600 RPM engine just happened to fall in my direction, I've decided to go with plan 1.1   Thats a 15KW ST and pulley ratios to make it operational.   This engine was set low idle at appox. 550 RPM, I lowered it a bit. I'll set it back up tomorrow.  Hadn't considered the low speed = low cooling air flow.  The data plate says 20 HP @ 2600 RPM.  I should be OK.
Still grinnin  ;D

Printed on the data tag .......NO.   US5741ST2A29
                                         HP.    20.0       BS649
                                                             Basic engine
                                                        Less accessories
                                        RPM.           62600

I kid you not.  Thought I'd seen 02600 till I got my glasses.
Might be a mis stamped tag ??
Err....... Properly Chastised  ;) ......promise not to grin till I score a real
LOW  speed Lister.

THANK YOU Peter !!! Now, where can I purchase a service manual for this engine? I'm kinda anal about service information.
Thanks again.
