Had a great time, lots of big radial engines...

Pictures start on page 5:

Nothing much before Page 5, Roosevelt Dam and a shanty town outside Phoenix with some steam stuff.

Cool pictures !!!

One thing puzzles me. Take the P&W R4360 as an example. How the heck do you cram that much stuff in such a small space while still managing to tighten the various fasteners ?????

Jens

You build it by numbers....

To take one cylinder out is a major job, and most of these were just changed out off the aircraft and sent for repair, they didn't try and repair them on the wing.

The older ones ditto in WWII, you could change a complete engine in a few hours. The B-29 R-3350 was a major headache, that one was a real pain to service.

Many of these radials were exchanged with the whole support framework etc etc as an assembly, a technique that I think was pioneered by Bristol in the UK.

There are a lot more radial engine shots in the various trip reports.

Mostly the sectioned R-4360 at the Hiller Aviation Museum, San Carlos, CA.

The trip reports menu is here:

The Hiller stuff is on:

and another load we took last year in October, but haven't put them on the website yet.
