Cleaning the Compression Change-Over Mechanism CS 3/1

Hi All,

The CS 3/1 needs its compression change-over mechanism chamber cleaned because it's filling up with soot.

Haven't done this before, so could you share with me the steps required to clean this chamber?

The compression valve is a lot like the other valve in the engine. The seats need to seat tightly and need to be lapped in the same as the intake and exhaust valves.

The valve has to seat on both sides, and a poorly seating valve will burn and lose a piece of the seating.

As it is pretty small in the first place, the biggest thing you can do wrong is not to screw it tightly down, whichever way you are moving it, allowing dirt to get under the seat.

There are copper washers that seal the housing and inner chamber half, make sure these are in good shape.

Also make sure the pressure spring on the spindle is OK and not broken.

P/No 10-3-11 Valve Spring. It's a very heavy square section spring about 1" or so long.

There is also a double-helical spring washer behind the control knob.

The square section springs are available from MSC Industrial Supply in New York. They will also have the washers. Look in the die spring section. I've dealt with this company for over 20 years and their products are top notch and reasonably priced.

There's nothing wrong with the CCV itself.  It holds it's position be it screwed in or out.  Just that I've noticed whilst it's being screwed, the period of time which compression gases escape has reduced.  I've therefore come to the conclusion that the CCV chamber is filling up with carbon soot.

Any tips on how to clean out this chamber?
