This means $805 for a 6/1 to Baltimore, right?  I'm guessing there are some other fees and headaches as well.  These sell from Portland for about $1,000.

No it means to Baltimore from hd trading a 6/1 will cost $460 and a 12/2 $610 less storage and dock fees.

From jkson delivered to Baltimore less storage and dock fees is as follows

6/1 650rpm single cylinder.......................US$ 345.00
8/1 850rpm single cylinder......................US$ 365.00
10/1 1000rpm single cylinder with balance weight
.........................................................US$ 435.00
14/1 1000rpm single cylinder with balance weight
.........................................................US$ 470.00
12/2 650rpm twin cylinder with balance weight
.........................................................US$ 630.00
20/2 1000rpm twin cylinder with balance weight
..........................................................US$ 695.00
26/2 1000rpm twin cylinder with balance weight
..........................................................US$ 735.00

The US dollar is extreamly valueable in India

These motors are a LOT cheaper than some folks would like for you to believe.

I've been following the messages about buying engines from India with a mixture of amusement and concern.  Because of my affiliation with one of the largest importers of these engines, this topic is of more than passing interest to me.

January 1, 2006 brought a severe set of restrictions on importation of diesel engines.  The EPA now requires all imported engines to meet emissions standards, and it's up to an importer to prove that they do.  That's not easy, and it's expensive.  Engines that are imported now must be labelled according to 40 CFR 1039.20. Among other requirements, they must carry placards with specific info on the importer (like who he is and where he lives) and there are big penalties for non compliance there too. One excerpt from the new reg:

"Penalties: Any person who circumvents or attempts to circumvent...requirements may be fined up to $32,500 per day of violation."

Serious, aren't they?

Please understand -- the exporters in India aren't on the hook for any of this.  They will gleefully take your money and ship you something.  Will it be worth buying?  That's only the first question you need to answer.  How to deal with the runaway flywheel that is today's EPA - that's up to you. And you won't get extra credit for good intentions, or green fuels, or any of that.

Yes, this sucks.  The big players (like automakers)  will be able to certify diesels for import, amortize the cost of certification and pass it through to customers.  Listeroids (and Changfas, and any other stationary import engine you care to name) are such a fringe product that nobody I know of is willing to do likewise.

Hi RG,
This subject has come up before around here, but there is disagreement what it means to "us", and if they (EPA) will even bother with "hobby" engines. So far, I haven't seen a comment from anyone (besides you) "in the buisiness" about what it means or doesn't mean to "listeroids", or the chinese stuff. None of the sellers on the net have addressed this issue. I would love to know what the EPA has in mind, if anything, for these ??? It would also be interesting to know just how a well prepared Listeroid performs with respect to the "regulations".

I didn't read your original post correctly.  That's a shocker.

Nice of you to come back kurdawg - and with the same tired old rants as well!  Are we going to go through your expert knowledge of cams, compression ratios, valve timing, best builders etc. before you go away again or become slowspeed something or other?  Nice of you to start with the engine prices, I think you did that a couple of years ago in an attempt to wind people up.  BUT - bad news dawg - a lot of us are still here and we have pretty good memories.  Oh - but things have changed a bit - can YOU say E.P.A.?

To get things rolling and to establish your expert credientials, I'll ask some of my previous questions so everyone knows where you are coming from:

How many Listers/oids have you, personally, owned (i.e. paid good money for)
What is your operating exerience - how many hours and under what conditions?
How many of the Indian manufacturers have sent you samples of their work?
Are you still using your pirated copies of software to design better valves and tappets?
This is  new one, but I'm really interested - Have you ever touched an actual Lister/oid?

Really, it's nice to have you back, it's been sooooo quiet around here!

JohnF13,

John, your post would PERHAPS, hold more weight if you did not sell engines, too.

However, you denigrate this person's name and all of that really detracts from the image that you probably want to project.  I really don't think that I would buy an engine from you.

HOWEVER, I AM READY TO BUY AN ENGINE OF AROUND 12/2.  ALL OF THIS BICKERING and confusion about the E.P.A. is probably delaying many folks, including myself, from making a purchase.

I intend to eventually buy more than one engine and the mass confusion is doing a lot of harm to this market, in my opinion.  DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THESE CONCERNS?

Joe

There is a lot going on right now Joe, people trying to wheel and deal others trying get product in before a crack down others trying lock up supliers.

Lots of people have bought engines from John and few complain.
John is trying to sell engines.

And very few people who sell these things are actual mechanics or engineers so you will find lots of debate as to who knows the most or sells the best. Most are hobbiest, but all are in it to make a buck first.

John is a retired police officer I am told, so it must count for something in the ethics front.

John perhaps you would tell the people your experince on these questions and technical background

this should be great fun :)

give em hell John!

what newbie's may or may not know without alot of reading is our beloved kyradog did much to muddy the waters way back when
and espoused all sorts of info from the useful all the way to absurd, and lots of it!

he riled up alot of folks, and in the end disappeared.

as for the epa thing, it is a serious issue indeed.

i don't think John or anyone else is trying to slow down anyone from purchasing an engine, good luck finding one.

until someone comes up with a bonifide, certified and papered engine that is "truely" epa compliant there will be a shortage of
engine's available.
there is a finite supply of preban engine's which are legal to sell, purchase and use as delivered.

to date i know of "no" compliant engine's that have been certified by the epa, so any current manufactured engine will
be non compliant and the importer/seller will be subject to severe penalty,,, this is a real concern.

non compliant engines are subject to seizure! so if you buy one you could be subject to a knock on the door and the loss of
not only your initial investment but all your work setting it up.
i am not aware of a fine to the buyer of a non compliant engine, as of yet at least.

further, if you try and import the parts or an engine, and the epa can prove you tried to circumvent the law you will be liable
for up to $32.5 k as the importer/selller of the engine.

this is serious crap fella's, not something to take lightly

As far as i know John F is an upstanding guy with a vast knowlege of these engines, perhaps he will take time to amaze one and
all just exactly what his experience is with these engine's.
Suffice it to say i think most will be very surprised with just what he does know.
